Rediscovering Christmas

This month I've been preaching about Rediscovering Christmas during our church worship services. Why? Because we or at least I get so caught up in the traditions and commercialization of the season that I(we) have a tendency to crowd out the story of God's redemptive plan for the world.

I know that most of you know the story of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. You would have to close your eyes and cover your ears in order to not see and hear this story mentioned on TV, in conversations or even on the radio. The problem is that the story becomes chatter and it's hard to really understand chatter. You may lean in, focus real hard and try to drown out the noise around you in order to hear it but unfortunately it still sounds like chatter. That's what happens to me around this time of year. And then it's all over and I look back and think, where did December go? I want this Christmas season to be different. I need this Christmas season to be different.

I get busy trying to get the Christmas lights up, find and decorate the tree, find a good parking spot so I don't have to carry the bags so far away from the building I just invested my life savings in. Oh, wait. This is supposed to be about Jesus. I really don't want to leave Him out. His birth into this world is why we celebrate in the first place. What can I do? Why not go back in time and re-discover the beauty of this powerful moment in God's redemptive plan for saving you and me?

This baby boy is the promise of God the Jews had been waiting for, for 400 years. And here He is. It was said that He would make things right that were wrong in this world or at least set things in motion to be made right. And He did. He would reveal His glory to and through unsuspecting people. And He did. All through out the bible, God seemed to be at a distance, but in this baby boy, He would visit up close and personal. And here He is.

What that means is, God is faithful to the promises he makes. God will restore the brokenness in our lives and in this world. God will show his power and glory in me and through me and He wants me to know that He is not some distant creator but a close friend. Wow. That is what Christmas is all about. That is why He is so special.

Take some time and rediscover the beauty of God's story this Christmas and Have a Merry Christmas!

Marriage Under-Construction: The well of intimacy goes deep!

Wells have always fascinated me. A well feeds my home but it doesn't quite look like this picture. While I was in Ethopia, some of the locals, a missionary and I loaded a truck to find the nearest well. With empty containers in the back of the truck, we made our way through the bumpy terrain and found the well we would be pumping for water. It didn't look like this picture either. It looked like a teeter totter with a spout to retrieve the water. We filled jug after jug. Some of the locals filled their jugs, balanced them with a long stick and carried them home. I appreciated the truck and so did my back.

I've seen a few wells like this picture that are no longer in use. They fascinate me because I want to know how deep the well goes. There are some wells that I can't even see the bottom.

This is a picture of marriage. There is so much more to marriage that awaits us. The well goes deep. The question is, will I explore the depth of my marriage?

When was the last time you learned something new about your spouse? Are you looking for something new? Many times we become familiar and start to loose the passion in learning about who we married. We think we have them figured out the first year of marriage. It is highly unlikely that you know everything there is to know about your spouse. Take some time and just look at them. Listen to them. Find out what stirs passion within them. Find out something new that makes them smile.

When was the last time you said something intimate to your spouse? I'm not talking about, "Hey baby, you interested?" I mean, when was the last time your commented on her beauty or intelligence? When have expressed something that you admire about him?

How about serving your spouse for a change? When was the last time you did something for them that they normally do, like wash the car or sweep the floor? That would get my motor running to see my wife washing the car in more ways than one!

How about touching your spouse in such a way that communicates that they are loved and appreciated? Sex is a great way God designed for us to touch intimately. Enjoy your spouse and allow them to enjoy you.

You will find that intimacy with your spouse goes deep. There is so much more for you. What are you waiting for? In the words of Steven Curtis Chapman's song, "I'm diving in!"

Marriage Under-Construction: How differently do you communicate?

Do you remember finding two empty cans and tying them together with yarn? My sisters and I do. Every child at one time or another will try to see if this works. My children have tried it and suspect yours, if you have children, have too! The only problem is that it doesn't work. How often have we said that about our communication with our spouse? Phrases like, "You don't understand what I'm saying." or "Why can't you see what I'm trying to say?" are spoken throughout the marriage relationship. Until. Until what? Until we learn that each of us communicates quite differently than the other.

My wife and I attended a marriage conference a few years back. The conference was called, "Weekend to remember." We had a wonderful time together, without kids, a private bedroom, talks about improving our marriage and time. During that weekend the conference speaker was talking about the different ways we communicate. He said that some of us are Land the Plane kinds of speakers, which are people who want to find the shortest path to the goal. They are the readers digest kind of communicators. Also, there are Enjoy the Ride communicators. They relax and tell the whole story. Every detail. Which of these two are you?

Then there are Sharing your feelings kind of communicators. They share how they felt about everything. Not the facts kinds of communicators. They only share the facts. Which are you, facts or feelings?

Finally, there are Thinking out loud people who ask questions, interrup, makes comments as they think of them. The Let's take turns like to listen completely, think through and then take their turn in sharing. They dislike interruptions. Which are you?

My wife and I sat next to each other listening to these things and started to identify which ones that reflected us. We were opposites. No wonder we didn't communicate well with each other.

Maybe you and your spouse are in the same boat. Maybe that is why you stuggle in understanding each other. Give each other a break and try your best. Be patient with each other and forgive each other when the time comes that you need to.

Marriage Under-Construction: Do you understand each other?

I loved the television show, Home Improvement. I still do. You can watch some of the episodes on youtube. For me, I couldn't wait for that familiar tune and manly grunt to start the shoe. One particular episode, Tim was not understanding what his wife Jill was saying to him. Later on in the show, Tim is talking about saftey on the job site and how good communication makes for a safe place to work. Holding a stop sign in the air, Tim said, "When a man, holding a stop sign, says 'stop', he means stop. If a women held up a stop sign, it would mean, "If you really knew me, you'd know what this means." And over the next ten minutes Tim and Jill would learn how to communicate so that each other knows what the other means.

There are times that I don't understand my wife. I'm sure she would say the same thing about me. There are moments I tell you that we are speaking a foreign language to each other. Have you ever felt that way with someone you love? How do we pull this thing together?

1. God's Word teaches us to listen for understanding and then respond thoughtfully. James 1:19 says to be quick to listen. To really understand what the other is saying. Then you can respond well. How is your listening skills? Are you really listening or are you just quiet, thinking about how to respond? Do you find yourself really understanding what the other is saying? How often are you saying, "I'm sorry. I misunderstood what you were saying,"?

2. Be willing to forgive each other for the lack of understanding and seek to understand. Colossians 3:13 says to forgive each other with the same intensity as Jesus forgives you your sin. Are you will to forgive them? Can you accept the fact that misunderstandings happen? Will you do your best to communicate more clearly?

I remember this saying, "Seek to understand, then to be understood."

Ask God to help you and your spouse to understand each other better and as you do, God will improve your marriage!

Generous Believer

Are you generous? I so want to be. I hate the desire to hoard from within my heart. I want to be someone who is generous with money, possession, time and prayers. How about you? All throughout scripture we read about a generous God who desires His people to be generous themselves. He not only desires it, He practices it. He gave us this beautiful earth to enjoy. He gave us the ability to live life. He provides us with whatever we need. He provides us with relationships. He provides us with money. He provides us with meaning in life. He is generous and He wants us to reflect that same generosity. Paul tells us that if we give little, we will receive little. If we give much, we will receive much. How much will I give? How generous will I be?

All through out this September I'm preaching on the subject of giving. Are we generous people? As you listen to these talks, consider how God's Spirit is speaking to your heart about your level of generosity. Is He telling you to open your hands a little more?

Personal Revival - Grace on Monday!

How did Grace on Monday go for you?

What am I talking about?

I challenged everyone in our church on Sunday to consider all the ways that God provided grace for their every activity on Monday. Everyone was to thank God for providing everything we need to accomplish everything He had for us through out the day.

When I was eating breakfast, it dawned on me that I hadn't thanked God for giving me breath that day. So I stopped and thanked Him.

All through out the day I tried to remember to thank Him for everything He had provided because I could nothing without His grace.

So the challenge was for you to consider how God's grace enabled you to do all that God wanted you to do for Him on Monday. How did you do?
If you did well to remember and thank God for His grace, way to go. Think about it again. How about Grace on Wednesday?

If you didn't do well, try try again.

Philippians 4:13, Paul tells us that he can do all things through Christ because Jesus will be the one giving him the strength to do it.

You can't do anything apart from God's grace.

Take a moment and thank God for His abundant grace that He freely gives to you.

Go in His grace today!

Personal Revival - Never underestimate the power of story!

I love stories, especially the ones that showcase God's glory!

Last night my wife was telling me a story of how God used her to encourage someone to attend church. She was excited to tell me her story and I was moved by her excitement.

This morning I sat across from a man who recently had been changed by God. He experienced a physical healing and a heart healing at the same time. I sat there listening to him retell the story. I was reminded again how big and powerful our God is.

Do you have a story to tell?

If we want to experience revival in our relationship with God, we need to start looking at the ways God is changing our lives. He is always at work, whether we know it or not. He is always whispering in our ear exactly what we need to hear when we need it. The problem is us. Sometimes we have closed our eyes and we aren't looking anymore at how God is moving in our lives. Once you see how God is working, then tell your story to someone.

There was a man born blind who experienced a healing. Jesus had given him his sight and the religious leaders wanted him to retell the story. Read about it in John 9 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+9&version=NIV)

This man tells his story to the pharisees and they refused to believe him. After asking him to tell it again the man said, "Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciple too?" That wasn't exactly what they wanted to hear but isn't that the point of telling and retelling these stories so others can follow Him too?

What is God doing in your life right now? Tell your story. It will bring God the glory He deserves and it may be just the right word to impact someone's life.

Personal Revival - Alright, I confess!

I need to confess a deep secret that I don't often share with people; I like to watch Star Trek. There it is, I said it. I like to see the goofy characters, similar set designs, and listen to the annoying sounds. I'm addicted to watching it. When I here the sound of the theme song...........Where was I? Oh, when I hear the sound of the theme song......Sorry, I catch myself daydreaming about the show.

Wow, I can't believe I said this outloud. I feel so much better. It's like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.

Is there anything you need to confess? It's funny how freeing we feel when we confess those deep secrets that we keep.

We are learning about personal revival at our church and part of revival involves confession and repentance. Confession is admitting to God the wrongs we've kept secret and repentance is about changing our behavior.

You may have some things deep in your heart and mind that you would never tell anyone. You possibly wouldn't even tell God your secrets. Those secrets will weigh you down and defeat you. Why not confess them to God right now? The Apostle John says in I John 1:9, (Click to view, http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+John+1%3A9&version=NIV) to confess our sins to God and when we do that, we find something of great value. What do we find?

Forgiveness. To be forgiven, is to feel free again. To remove the weight from our shoulders.

What do you need to confess to God right now? Anything? Confess it to Him right now.

Personal Revival - Catching my reflection

When I saw this picture, I was intrigued by it. I like the creative idea of taking a picture of something that is actually a reflection. So here I am, sitting and staring at it. I look at all the details. What is that in the far corner? What is on the picture frame hanging on the right shoulder of the seated man? Who is this guy I'm looking at? All this thought from a reflection.

A mirror can tell us what others see when they watch us. It can tell us when something is amis or out of place. It can tell us when we have something in our teeth or when we are fishing out an eyelash from underneath an eyelid. Mirrors tell us a great deal.

Our children are a mirror of us as their parents. They learn how to react to situations by watching how we react to situations. They say the same things we say. Sure they have their own uniqueness but much of what we see in them is what they see in us. Just today my daughter did something that often times I do. My wife was quick to point out where she got that from. Ouch! I don't like seeing that. If I act like that, then I don't like how I act in that situation.

We are also a mirror of Christ. As a follower of Jesus, people see who Jesus is by watching me. They also watch you. Is Jesus really compassionate? Is Jesus really forgiving? Is Jesus really serious about truth? People find out who Jesus is by watching His followers. The Apostle Paul tells us to follow his own reflection as he follows the reflection of Christ.

We are a mirror of who Jesus is. Are you happy about that? Ashamed?

Sometimes I'm ashamed. Just like when I saw my daughter doing something I did that isn't right, I'm ashamed and I'm equally ashamed that sometimes others catch a glimpse of Jesus in me that isn't right. I feel terrible about that. So what do I do?

I ask questions. Is there anything in my life, what I do or say, that would bring shame to the name of Christ and His character? Ask a friend, a spouse, a family member or even your pastor. Ask God! See what He says.

Personal Revival: The destructive power of pride

Pride can be a destructive force. It can give us the confidence we need to do things we never thought possible and it can also lead us down a path of total destruction.

When I think about the destructive power of pride, I remembered the story of the Titanic. Thought to be the greatest ship of its era. The unsinkable ship. Because of the that pride, they misunderstood the power of an iceberg. The unsinkable ship now lies on the ocean floor. That is the exact destructive power of pride.

God knows the destructive power of pride and does His best to communicate to us our need of His leadership in our lives. He knows that we can choose to live our own lives with pride but He also knows that it will come to a terrible end. Or we can surrender our lives to Him, to His guidance and find what we need, to do the things we never thought possible.

Is pride getting in your way with your relationship with God? If it is, it will end like the Titanic.

Why not come to God in humility and submit your thoughts, words and actions to Him right now?

Personal Revival - Giving up the white hat!

Today is the day I gave up the white hat for good. What does the white hat symbolize? It symbolizes leadership. When I worked with my dad during the summers of college years, the leaders wore white hats. They were the authority over the orange hats. The workers wore orange hard hats and that was my situation working with my dad. I did whatever the white hats wanted me to do. If I didn't follow the instructions of the white hats, I could've lost my job. I knew my place and there was comfort in that. In experiencing personal revival, what hat do you wear in your relationship with God? White or orange?

Unfortunately, I have struggled wearing the white hat in my walk with God. I have tried to control the areas of my life that I subconsciously felt God couldn't handle. I did what I wanted to do with money. I did what I wanted to do with my temptations. I did what I wanted to do with my family. God allowed me to wear the white hat but it didn't get me anywhere. I was more stressed, more impatient and less content. So I quit. I gave up the white hat and gave it to the One who can truly handle it.

Are you wearing the white hat in your relationship with God? Surrender it today. Commit to His instructions for living life and find peace, contentment and joy.

Personal Revival

The desert could be a beautiful place to visit. The rock formations, all the sand and the big blue sky are worth a visit once in a while. I wouldn't want to live there but I would mind a visit, especially during the winter months.

But there is one thing that depresses me about the desert, it lacks the evidence of vitality and life. It actually looks dead to me. Not a place I would want to establish a farm, that's for sure. Very little would grow in that environment. So why would God want to take us to the desert?

Hosea 2:14 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hosea%202&version=NIV1984) says, "Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her."

In the desert, we find that all the distractions are removed. There is little internet connection, little cell phone reception, no outlets to recharge laptops and Ipods, and miles of loneliness. We are forced to slow down in the desert and actually listen to God.

What does God want to say to you right now? Are there too many distractions that cause you to miss His whisper? Get alone with your bible, away from the distractions and listen to God Word today.

I love boats. Weekends as a high schooler was devoted to the water with my friends and a speed boat. We would ski, tube and just drive around enjoying the weather.

Something I've learned about the water is that you can easily drift without even knowing it. One minute you are at one place and another you are 15 feet away from it. This is where the anchor comes into to play. The purpose of an achor is to keep one steady and in one place.

Because of the winds of society, we need to hold on to something that will keeps us steady and in one place. That anchor is Jesus.

So, let me ask you, who are you anchored to, Society or Jesus?

Paul tells us that we need to be careful what we get connected to. We have no benefit being anchored to the world but we have everything God has promised when we anchor our lives to Jesus Christ.

How do we know who we are anchored to?

First of all, if you are anchored to the world you will desire the things of this world and the personal pleasures it brings. Or if you are anchored to Jesus, you will desire to please Him and do whatever it is He wants for your life.

Second of all, if you are anchored to the world you will find that your values are vastly different than the Biblical values presented in the Bible. (i.e. money, sex, power, pleasure, work, etc.)

These are just a few ideas and thoughts to help us discover who we are connected to.

So, who are you anchored to? World? or Jesus?

As you close: God knows how difficult it is to live in this world and be anchored to Him. Ask Him for His guidance and strength to remain true to Him.

X-Ray: Sardis, Day 1

I don't know if you realize this or not, but the battery in our cars are very important. If you battery isn't working, you aren't going anywhere.

I have two vehicals that will need to have the batteries replaced pretty soon. My van still has the original from 2004. My truck still has its original and it's an 2007. You can tell everytime I try to start them up that it takes a lot to turn over the engine. My dad tells me that I'm running on borrowed time.

One day I went out to my vehical and it wouldn't start. How frustrating is that. I have places to be and people to see. I don't have time for a dead battery. Battery charger, here I come. So why don't I just replace it? Because I'm cheap!

There is something to be learned from this battery about the spiritual life. It doesn't matter if you have a battery hooked up to the car, you still have to have the power the battery provides for the car to work. Some people have dead batteries.

There were many people in the church at Sardis who had the reputation of being alive, but they were dead on the inside. Jesus saw that and pointed it out to them. They need to wake up, return to Christ and follow Him. This would be the battery charger they were in desperate need of.

How do you know if your battery is dead spiritually?

1. If you don't care about God's leadership in your life, your battery is dead or dying.
2. If you have a bible but don't care to read it and learn from it, your battery is dead or dying.
3. If you think just being a nice person is all that you need to please God, your battery is dead or dying.

So how is your battery?

Live, led, keep in step with the Holy Spirit is your responsibility.

As you close: Why not pray and ask God to help you to live by, be led by and to keep in step with the Spirit. He will then begin to recharge your battery and you will see life begin again.

Learning from yesterday, I decided to read a book last night. What happened you say? Well, I was speaking about being careful what influences us and I had a moment when I was not paying attention to what was influencing me. Not this day. So I started a book. I thought, "I need to be careful what is influencing me, especially at night when I'm tired and my guard is down." So last night I went to my personal library and looked through the titles. I have some great books on my shelf but nothing was really sticking out for me. Then I found it. I remember wanting to read this book but everytime I thought about it, I was terribly busy and wouldn't be able to get to it yet. Until now.

The book is called "Uprising." I took this book off the shelf and began my journey through it. So far, this book is focused on helping people experience the life that God intended them to experience. We get used to the mundane and live there. God has so much more for us and will we take Him up on the journey.

That reminds me of the time when Jesus invites the disciples on a journey. He would be with them forever even though they wouldn't be able to see His face. They were going on a journey to tell others about Jesus. There will be some that will accept this good news and others who will reject. Some will grow deep in their relationship with Christ and others will walk away. And He will be with us the whole way.

But you have a choice to join Him on the journey or play it safe in the mundane. So what will you choose to do?

That is the power of a good book. This book has influenced me in one chapter. How will it impact me in chapter two. But this couldn't have happened unless I cared about what was influencing me.

Do you care about the influences around you? You should. Take control and make sure a positive influence is on your shelf.

As you close: Ask God to point out a book in the bible that He would want you to read and/or a book that would impact you in a specific area. Ask Him. He'll answer.

X-Ray: Pergamum, Day 1

Yesturday I had a Homer Simpson moment. You know when he realizes he did something stupid and he says, "D'oh!!" I was watching a show on Netflix and some language was being used that I find inapproapriate. I let it go and my wife walked into the room and commented about it. After a moment, I came to the conclusion, "Yeah. She's right. Time to shut it off."

During church our pastor was talking about influence. He was saying that we influence others by what we are influenced by. That pastor is me. I remember what i said, but the problem was, I wasn't living it out.

Do you ever catch yourself in moments like that? I know I shouldn't be watching this or doing that or saying something inapproapriate. It doesn't matter what you know. What is matters is what you do with what you know. Thank God for do overs.

Really? Call down fire on them? What they were saying was, "They should be killed. Eliminated." Jesus had been teaching them about love and mercy and this is what the disciples come away with. This was the disciples "D'oh!!" moment. Open mouth insert foot moment.

But the good news it, they moved on. Jesus gave them a second chance. They would need a lot more when this journey was over and Jesus was full of fresh starts.

Be careful who is influencing you. And when someone points out a dangerous influence, listen to them. Think about it. And start over fresh.

As you close: Ask God if there is anything in your life that is bad influence. We become blind to those influences and we need His help to discover them.

28 Days of Loving - Day 5

I'm sure many of you have watched the Toy Story movies with your kids, or grandkids, or even for yourself. They are fantastic movies.

During the first movie, the audience is introduced to a child named Sid. Sid is an evil boy. He loves to play with toys, but he loves to destroy and recreate toys even more. Sid is the villian in the movie. He makes parents think, "If he were my child, he would be disciplined."

Children are precious to all of us. Our children's future is especially important to us. We want our children to grow up and be valued members of society. To use their talents to better our society and to raise a family to do the same. To love God and live for Him. So, how are we doing with these goals?

Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way they ought to go and when they are old, they will not turn from it." Our job is to train them up. To train means to discipline. To teach and guide them in what is right and good. It is our job to parent them.

Talk about God when you sit down in the privacy of your own home. Talk about God on the road when you are out and about in society. Talk about God through out your day, when you rise and when you go to sleep. God is meant to be in your whole day. That is how you instill a love for God in your children.

Too often parents keep God in the church building. Couldn't He come into your home? When was the last time you prayed together? Read the Bible together? Talked about Godly things together? Talked about His wisdom in making good decisions?

As you close: Thank God for children and thank Him for the privilege in parenting. Ask Him for His help to raise them to love Him completely. Ask for His help in talking about Him at home and at various moments in life.

My wife and I were at a wedding this past Fall. Some old friends were getting married and they had asked Tiffany and I to join them for the ceremony. We accepted their invite and had a weekend getaway from all of our responsibilities.

At lunch, prior to the wedding, Tiffany and I got into an arguement. Suffice it to say, we were not in too good of a mood and then to head off to a wedding made it worse. I'm sure she was thinking, "How can I warn the bride of the impending doom she is about to commit to?" I was thinking, "I hope he has a lot of patience. He is going to need it."

At the reception, which is where this picture was taken, I was reminded again of my own wedding day. Almost 15 years ago, Tiffany and I were in the same shoes of these two newlyweds. She is a wonderful woman even though she has bad days. I hope the same can be said of me. We were dancing on the dance floor, yes I know how to cut a good rug, and I had one of those moments. The kind of moments when the world stops and you thank God for the spouse whom God brought to you. The argument faded and the ride home was much more sweet. All in all, it was a good weekend.

God tells us to love our wife and for a woman to submit to her husband. This is the love and respect principle in marriage.

Did you know that there are millions of bacteria located in your mouth? Yuck! Sorry if you are eating and reading this.

The purpose of those bacteria is to help your body digest the food you are eating. Even though it causes your mouth to be unclean, it does actually help things along. According to Dr. Oz, vegetarian mouths are cleaner because those who eat meat leave it between their teeth which feeds the bacteria. Kissing actually transfers bacteria to the other person and they start growing in a new place. Think about that the next time you kiss your spouse.

But I'm not talking about bacteria of the mouth today. I'm talking about respecting what goes in and what goes out of it.

The things you say are quite powerful. They have the power to heal and the power to destroy. They have the power to build up or tear down. Your heart is on display when you speak.

Jesus cares about what is coming out of your mouth. If you really understand how God loves you, you will learn to care for your mouth. You will care about the words you use. You will think through your words.

Have you ever regretted saying something? Wish you could take it back? We all have. We may have been right or maybe we were wrong. Regardless, words are powerful and should be considered carefully.

So when your boss is frustratingyou, or your children are testing you, or a friend is challenging you, consider your words carefully. They reveal the heart.

28 Days of Loving - Day 2

This past Sunday I was talking about how the love God has for us changes our view of ourselves. At least it should. When we truly realize that God values us as special and sacred, it should change the way we look at ourselves.

Are we allowing the things of this world to damage our value? I Corinthians 6:19 says that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this, we should honor God with our bodies.

That means we should care about what we allow our eyes to see.

Do you remember that song, "Oh be careful little eyes what you see..." Already you are singing that song in your head. Well, this simple nursery rhyme is a powerful song. Why? Because we should be careful what our eyes ponder on.

This week the new cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue came out. All the talk is about the new girl on the cover page. She may be a beautiful woman who is dressed in a very revealing swimsuit. But do I really need to be looking at her like that? Is that good for my mind? Is that good for my image of my wife? Will I be thinking of her instead of my wife? All because I took a peek at a Magazine cover.

God wants you to be careful with what you look at. He knows how impressionable our minds are just by simply looking around us. Learn from King Davids mistake.

David's eyes caused a great problem. Did he flinch when he saw her bathing? Did he try to walk away? Did he justify his thoughts?

Oh be careful little eyes what you see...David was not careful with his eyes and the thing he did, displeased the Lord.

I want to please the Lord with my eyes. So I need to guard them. I need to be thinking ahead so that I can protect them. Are you doing the same?

As you close: Ask God for his help to keep your eyes pure from the filth in this world. Ask God to give you wisdom to know what is good to look at and what is not.

28 Days of Loving - Day 1

During the month of February, we will be talking about love. I know that sounds so cheesy, but hey, we be cheesy at least once.

We all have a need to love and be loved. Many flower shops and candy stores see their revenue go up just because of this need within each of us. Every February, commercials flood the airwaves to remind us of our duty as husbands. What do you do for your wife, obviously if you are married, for Valentine's day?

My wife is lucky to get anything from me before Valentines Day. I wait until the day after and get it 50% off. While most people have moved on, I'm expressing love to my wife and saving money at the same time. I hope she finds it as romantic as I do. Giving is an act of love and it doesn't matter when you give it.

The kind of love that God showed us is different than we are used to. We understand romantic love and brotherly love. But we have no idea what Divine love is all about.

This is the kind of love He came to give us. This kind of love is unconditional, unselfish, and sacrificial. We would never know this kind of love unless God showed it to us first. That is how special this kind of love is.

And when you exprience this kind of love, John writes that your heart will be complete. His love is totally satisfying.

So how do I experience this kind of love? By surrendering your heart to Jesus. By asking Jesus to forgive you of your sin and live in your heart. When you believe it and tell it to Jesus, the Bible says the Holy Spirit will come and live in your heart and you will know first hand the Divine love God wants you to have.

Do you have this divine love? Surrender to Jesus today.

I Love My Church - Day 10

On Tuesday, when the big snow storm hit our area, Tiffany, the kids, I and another family were on our way for a scheduled mini-break at Kalahari Waterpark in Sandusky, Ohio. Imagine this picture with snow covering the ground and people wrapped up in winter coats.

We were able to stay ahead of the storm and return after everthing was plowed. We even came home to a plowed driveway and shoveled sidewalk. It was such a blessing to come home to that loving act and I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you. You know who you are and you are much appreciated.

While we were enjoying the waterpark, something caught my attention. It was both our families enjoying each others' company. Laughing, talking, eating and playing (and the momentary emotional breakdowns, but that is to be expected with kids.) On the drive home I kept thinking, this was a great trip. A great break and a great time with friends. This must be what heaven will be like.

Audio Adrenaline wrote a song, "A Big House" describing what they thought the glories of heaven will be like. Whether they are right or off by a little, it will be a place for God's people to enjoy Him and to enjoy each other. And He instructs us to take time off each week to have a touch of heaven here on earth.

He says in Exodus 20, "Honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy." We are to be a people who take a break each week and enjoy life with our family, friends and God. Jesus also addresses this issue of the sabbath when he answered the Pharisees about the sabbath in the Gospel of Mark.

The Sabbath was made for man. We were given a weekly gift from God; the Sabbath. It is a time to refresh and enjoy life.

I Love My Church - Day 9

The Super Bowl is next Sunday and many people are gearing up for it. Who will win and who will lose? Which has the best offense and which has the best defense. Who will be victorious in the end?

I love watching the big game. The thrill of victory. The smell of chips and salsa. Children running in front of the television. Women playing board games. Ahhhh. What a night. Sunday night can't get here fast enough.

Something to consider though, at the end of every game, there is a winner and there is a loser. It's all part of the game. And when it's your team that wins, the victory makes it a sweet event.

We are in the middle of a contest and that contest is between Elohim and Diabolos. Huh? Who are they? Elohim is the Hebrew name for God and can you guess who Diabolos is?  Yep. That is the Devil.  The Devil has been at odds with God since the creation of the world.

You can examine their offenses and defenses. You can examine their players. You can look at the stats. But in the end there really is no contest.  The Devil is completely outmatched on every detail. And we already know the end of the game. The book of Revelation describes for us how God finishes what He started.  The Devil is thrown into the lake of fire and the children of God enjoy eternity with Elohim in paradise.

You have reason to be excited. Our team wins. We are still in the middle of the game but we already know that Elohim wins.  You are victorious because you are His child.

How do you become His child? By surrendering your life to Jesus Christ. When you ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, He will do just that. At that moment you become His child and you my friend join the winning team.

If you are a child of God, are you living a victorious life? Are you living with Hope?  Are you living with joy? Are you living with love? Because the game has already been won, you can live a life that is victorious.  Let's get a little excited. Put a smile on your face and walk a little taller. Give a helping hand to someone...

I Love My Church - Day 8

I was at Winter Jam last night with my daughter and many others from our church family. For those of you that don't know, Winter jam is a Christian Music Concert featuring many bands. It was terrific. Food was okay, music was good, and daughter and friends to enjoy it with, priceless.

One thing did stick out to me though. The entire stadium was filled to capacity and something happened when we all worshipped together. The Holy Spirit became visible and I felt the heart of God must have been pleased. This must be what God's heart longs for. A place filled with people who are worshipping Him. Why? Because He is worthy of all praise.

Can you imagine a sea of people lifting up their voice in worship and praise of Almighty God? We have moments of it here during our worship services but one day is coming when every tongue will confess and every knee will bow to Jesus Christ who is Lord over all.

That is why I love the church. I have the opportunity to praise Him and join the ranks in practicing for the day that is to come.

I like to eat. Eating is a good thing. I find it can be very fulfilling, especially when I'm hungry. What satisfies your tummy when you are hungry?

What about the soul? How do we satisfy the soul? Since birth, there is a hunger in the soul that many feel but have no idea how to satisfy. So we satisfy it with sexual addictions, food addictions, beverage addictions, material addictions, adrenaline fixes, you name it. We are trying to find something that will satisfy the soul.

There is only one place where you can find satisfaction for the soul, it is in God's Word, the Bible.

"Man doesn't live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." God's words will satisfy the soul. Where do we find His words? We find in the age old book that has stood the test of time; the Bible. We find satisfaction as we read and obey His words.

You've read one chapter today already. Make that a habit of yours to read a passage or chapter every day. You can reach for the protein bar and have your tummy filled. Reach for the Soul satisfaction bar found in God's word and satisfy the soul.

I Love My Church - Day 6

One reason I love the church is that we get the chance to develop wonderful friendships.

Facebook has become the face of our friendship world. It gives us an opportunity to see how people are doing and an opportunity to connect quicker than ever.

What is friendship? Wikipedia defines friendship, "In a comparison of personal relationships, friendship is considered to be closer than association, although there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations."

In short, we have varying degrees of frienships but the intent is that it is closer than just knowing someone exists. The degree of intimacy, closeness, is up to each individual. I choose to get closer to some than others. Others I keep at an arms distance. I know you do the same.

Frienships are meant to be a part of your church family experience. You are meant to find a friend, someone you can be open with and be someone for others to open up with. Do you have that kind of friend in the church?

King David was a friend of Jonathan. Jonathan's father, Saul was king of Israel and desired to kill David over a jealous spirit. David was a mightier warrior than Saul and that produced an anger in Saul and it drove him to attempt murder of David. God protected David and used Jonathan to protect him. In I Samuel 20 we read about their last time together as close friends.

Kind David had committed a terrible sin. In this passage David is pleading with God to forgive him. To remove the stain of sin from his heart. He's asking God to wash away all his iniquity. And that washing will make him whiter than snow.

Every year when snow falls, at least once I'm reminded of this wonderful blessing in being a part of God's family through Jesus. This snow reminds me that I'm forgiven. And boy, do I need it. I need forgiveness. I mess up. At times I say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing, and think the wrong thing. It would be a miserable life not having the forgiveness of God.

Do you realize that your life is a testimony of God's forgiveness? Yours and mine are His testimoney to the world. That is one of the many reasons why I love the church. I'm forgiven and God uses me to point others to Him in order for them to find forgiveness. Wow!

Is there someone in your life who you know needs to know that they can be forgiven? They may not feel worthy of forgiveness and choose to reject it from Him.  Mercy is not earned, it is given/received.  Offer that hope of forgiveness to someone. Pay attention to the stories of their lives. They may be carrying baggage around that Jesus can free them from.

Is there something you haven't found forgiveness with? Is there something in your past that you feel God could never forgive and that you should hold onto it to remind you of your guilt?  Be free today. Ask for His forgiveness. He will offer it to you freely.

Forgiveness is why you can love the church.

As you close:  Thank God for the forgiveness found through His Son. And then next time you look at snow, let it remind you of the washing and cleansing power of God in your life.

I Love My Church - Day 4

I don't know about you, but saying goodbye is hard to do. It could be a friend who is moving away; it could be a spouse who has to travel for work or family emergencies; it could be someone who leaves the church. Regardless of the situation, it's still hard to say goodbye. But there is good news in the sadness.

When Jesus died on the cross, people were weeping as they were saying goodbye to a major influencer in their lives. He has given them wisdom, healing, hope and encouragement. At that moment, He was gone. But Jesus knew it would be for only a moment. He knew that He would be alive again. So He gave His disciples some hope in response to their sorrow.

The hope Jesus gave to the disciples was that they were going to see Him again. Life doesn't end when the last breath is exhaled. We have Heaven.

That is the good news we all have. In every moment we say goodbye to someone, we are reminded again that we will see each other again. It may be here, there or in Heaven. But the fact still remains, we will see each other again.

That is why I love our church. We have the opportunity to build friendships that will last forever. Sure, people move away; sure people die; sure people leave for work. We have hope that we will see each other again.

I hope this encourages you today as it does me.

I Love My Church - Day 3

Have you noticed how quickly certain things go out of fashion? I was at the Outlet Mall the other day and saw the new lines for winter. After looking at those styles and then reviewing mine, I concluded that I was out of fashion. The fashion world moved on and I guess I stayed behind.

Things come and go in our world. Few things really stand the test of time. Aside from the basic necessities of life, there is one thing that has stood the test of time: the Church.

Those committed followers of Christ have stood the test of time. People still gather, people still read the Bible, people still fellowship, people still prayer, etc. While other things have come and gone, the church has remained. Why? Because Jesus said, "...I will build my church upon this rock and the gates of Hell will not stand against it." What Jesus started 2000 years ago is still going strong.

When Jesus left this earth and ascended to Heaven, the disciples could have just turned their backs and went home; they remained. They remained faithful. Did you notice what happened? They pressed on. They replaced Judas and moved on. Because they moved on and were faithful in following Jesus, we have the message, and the church body today. This family has been together for over 2000 years and it doesn't go out of fashion. Now some churches thrive and some take a dive but regardless, what Jesus started is still kicking.

Another reason why I love the church and I love my church family with it.

I Love My Church - Day 2

One reason why I love the church is because there is a strong passion for this book; the Bible.

This book is filled with God's words whispered to humanity. The Apostle Paul writes, "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, sot hat the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

This book is God-breathed. It breathes life into everyman. Just like in the beginning when God breathed life into Adam, He breathes life into our soul through these words.

When was the last time we took the time to read these words? Really read these words and learn who God is, what God has done and what He desires to do in our lives. For some of us, we get too busy with everyday things that we lose sight of this book and the power it contains to help us live a great life. For some of us, we get too confused and we lose motivation in digging for the truth that isn't that far under the surface. And the great thing about this book, the more you dig the more you find. It marvels us.

We presently enjoy the freedoms in reading this book at any time, anywhere. Are you taking advantage of those freedoms?

Paul and Silas traveled to a town called, Berea, in order to teach them about the scriptures. And they made sure that what Paul was teaching was correct. I Love My Church - Day 1

God treasures you as grandparents treasure grandchildren. This is a photo of my parents with eight of their ten grandchildren. This was taken during our recent christmas vacation. We had such a wonderful time. My parents treasure all of their grandchildren.

God treasures you as well. He is so emotionally connected to you, that whatever happens to you, impacts Him personally, emotionally causing Him to react. Whether it is joy or sorrow, He is so connected to you that you will see Him move.

Sometimes we think God feels very distant, but in fact, He is truly up close and personal. That is the way He intended things to be with His creation.

This text says that He made you in His image. You and I can never be God. We could never take His place. Many will try and fail. The word "image" means shadow, resemblance or likeness. We were made to be very close in likeness to Him. He did it for the purpose of relationship. He did it so that we can have an up close and personal relationship with Him. To be able to understand Him and be confounded by Him all at the same time.

He is emotionally connected to you. He cares for you. He is working in your life in ways you will not know immdiately but will come to understand eventually. He knows your name and calls you out. He knows what you need and when you need it. He is emotionally connected to you.

This new year, let us remember how God feels about us. That connection is not just between you and Him, it is a connection He wants you to feel in the family of God, in your local church. We'll talk more about that this week.

HOPE - Peace with God Day 3

This morning I was watching the news and they were talking about a deal with the Russians. One guy stepped up to the podium and told how the Russians can't be trusted.

Who can you trust these days? We have enemies around every corner. Even though we are a major provider of humanitarian aid, we still have everyone gunning for us. When can we just be at peace?

According to the scriptures, we were enemies of God.   As a result, we had no peace with Him.

The Apostle Paul teaches that because of our sin, we had become enemies of God. Remember, sin is rebellion against God. It is like Pinocchio rebelling against his creator, Geppetto. Not willing to listen to him, despising him and at times intentionally doing things to hurt him. That is what our sin has done to our creator, God.    As a result, we are enemies.

In war, it is better to kill than to be killed, right? Most Generals and Commanders understand loss but they don't go into battle desiring everyone of their men to die.  Victory in battle is connected to life, not death.  Since we are enemies of God, victory would be our death and His life. But God did the opposite. He died and let us live.

He died so that we could have peace with one another. His death brought reconciliation. His death brought about forgiveness for those who request it. His death brought life to our dead souls. He made peace between us.

That is good news this Christmas. God did something so extraordinary, that it won't ever be forgotten.

Are you will to let something go instead of getting revenge? Are you willing to take the hurt instead of hurting? Are you willing for peace instead of war?

As you close:  Thank God for His brave act in dying for us when it should have been us dying. Thank God for forgiveness and mercy because of Jesus. Thank God that we are no longer enemies of God, but His children when we surrender our lives to His Son, Jesus.

HOPE - Peace with God Day 2

If pleasing God was based upon works, how will you ever know if you have done enough? You can not find peace with God based upon works. You will never be able to do enough and you will never know if you have arrived at the required destination. So what is it that pleases God? How can I know that Him and I are at peace with one another?

One day a student of the "Law" approached Jesus with this very thought in mind.

What is the greatest commandment? What is it that I can do to make God happy with me? Those are the questions that are filling this guys mind. We have lived with those questions in mind too. We wonder at times if we did enough good things, would God make life easier for us. We wonder if we were nice enough, or gave enough, would he give us more than we could ever imagine. We all want God to be happy with us. But what does Jesus say to answer his questions?

Love! Love God. Love people. It's not in doing, it's in loving. Loving will be reflected in some sort of doing but loving and doing are two distinct things. If you do and have no love, it means nothing. If you love without doing, it means nothing. This love is a choice. It is a choice to love God and by choosing to love God, you are also choosing to listen/follow Him. If you choose to love others, you are choosing to do that through compassion, mercy and generousity.

What pleases the heart of God is love for Him. That means you have chosen to believe in Him and have chosen to surrender your life to Him. As a result, you experience a new start in life, forgiveness of sin and the willingness to listen/follow Him. This is the peace that you can find with God. This is what pleases the heart of God.

Do a little heart examination. Do you love God? Do you believe He is God, Creator of all things, Redeemer of mankind, and Guide for your life? Are you willing to follow Him to whatever end?

If you can say, "I love God. I have given Him my heart, mind, soul and all my strength," you have peace with God.

HOPE - Peace with God Day 1

If there is ever a time that is void of peace, it seems like Christmas. Even though peace surrounds this little baby boy born in Bethlehem, we find ourselves without peace. With all the hustle and bustle to get things done, we feel exhausted and worn out. Mornings come too soon and the day is over too quickly.

This week we are going to be talking about peace with God and with those around us. We all need peace and we are going to find it in only one place, Jesus.

Isaiah is a prophet of God. Prophets would receive word from the Lord and share it with the people. Sometimes these words were words of judgement. Sometimes they were words of encouragement and sometimes these words were words about the future. This is one of those futuristic passages, yet it should give them hope right then.

He will be called...Prince of Peace. He will be the one to usher in peace like a royal leader. Many times leadership brings peace. Why? Because people feel at peace when the leader is around.

For instance, think of Bret Favre of the Minnesota Vikings. If you don't have any idea what I'm talking about, google it. Anyway, the team appears apprehensive and weak without Bret as Quarterback. They don't score touchdowns, guys drop passes, and even the running game appears slow. (I attended the rescheduled game against the Giants because of their collapsed roof and w/o Favre as QB, that is exactly what they did.) But something happens to the team when he is in the game. They calm down, they focus and they play very competitively.

Jesus is that kind of leader and even more so. What Isaiah was saying about Jesus is that when He comes, He will bring peace to the people. They will find rest in their souls because of Him. Think about it. How many people describe the peaceful feeling they have when they surrender their lives to Him? Many, if not all. He brings peace. Even when it is difficult in life, we can rest in His secure hands.

Do you need to be reminded of that security? You are secure in His hands. He can bring peace to your soul. If you are anxious, pray. Ask Him for His peace and then trust Him in the moments ahead.

As you close: What worries you? Talk to the Lord about it and ask for His peace in those situations. And then trust Him!

HOPE - Opportunity to start over Day 2

After I graduated from college, Tiffany and I began our journey into the ministry. I will never forget the churches we looked at. There was a church in Wyoming that was looking for a youth pastor. The pastor was great but I couldn't see myself falling in love with ranches and rodeos. So we passed on that church.

Then we started to look at another church. They invited us to visit and meet with their team. We didn't take the job. The main reason we turned away from that position was because the church people were struggling with racism. They asked me point blank, "How do you feel about ______ people?" There was a problem and they wanted to know what side we were on. We quickly learned that God was not calling us to that church.

Racism is a difficult thing in our country. We have overcome those obstacles but there are still traces of it. Traces of it in Lagrange County sorry to say. If there is anywhere for people to have the opportunity to start over, it would be in the church and it will be available for anyone, regardless of skin color. That is how God wants it.

Peter had a problem with racism. Peter was a Jewish man who was committed to reaching other Jews. Until God interrupted him and instructed him to let go of this superior attitude and reach the gentiles.

Peter learned that God wanted to give the opportunity to start over with life in the gentile people. Gentiles are non Jews which is the rest of the population on the planet. And look what happened to Cornelius. He and his family gave their lives to Jesus Christ. Peter was amazed and I'm sure he thought to himself, "I could've missed this if I let racism rule my heart. God can change anyone and it is my job to make him known to all." Peter ended up in Rome, which was the epicenter of the earth at that time, preaching the gospel to all people.

God wants to give the opportunity to start over to anyone. Is there someone who needs this good news that you are holding back sharing with? Learn from Peter today.

As you close: Pray that all white, black, hispanic and whoever else lives in our county will surrender their lives to Jesus Christ and experience the opportunity to start over. Pray that our church will reach all people groups in our area.

HOPE - Opportunity to start over Day 1

Something that is really great about celebrating Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ, is that we have hope of starting over. The message of the gospel is that we can hit the start over button and do things differently.

This week we are going to be looking at different people in the bible who, through Jesus were able to start their life over.

Let's start with the apostle Paul. Paul was committed to Judiasm. He was committed to the Law. As the early church began to form, Paul naturally was opposed to it and became a violent aggressor against it. Having people killed and having people thrown into prison were just a few of the violent actions he had taken against the church.

On his way to Damascus to arrest more of those who were following Jesus Christ, something happened that changed his life forever.

"He is my chosen instrument." God said this about Paul. His name was actually Saul but it was changed to Paul. Acts 13:9 is the verse that signifies the change of name..."Then Saul, who was also called Paul..." Many believe this name change is because of the change in Paul's life. Others believe it was to protect his life from those who were trying to kill Saul. Regardless, his life was different because of Jesus.

God can give anyone an opportunity to start over. The past is the past. It can't be changed but our present can. That is God's gift to you.

This Christmas season, remember that God gives the gift of a new beginning. Is there anyone that you know that might need an opportunity to start over with God? Talk to them about it. Now is the time. Is there someone you need to show love to and/or forgive? Now is the time to start over.

As you close: Pray for those who are distant from Jesus. Pray for those who have never surrendered their life to Him.

HOPE - Healing for the brokenhearted - Day 4

Having hope is like breathing oxygen. You can't live without it.

The world in which we live gives both hope and despair. Both are available. You can choose to live in despair and you can choose to live in hope. The choice is in your hands.

Most of us would choose hope. Who really wants despair? Not many. But unfortunately we live as if we have chosen despair. We run ourselves into the ground with work. We hold on to bitterness and anger towards others. We have addictions to occupy our thoughts. It all seems pretty oblique. Why would we take this road in our lives? It doesn't make sense.

But when you have hope you have energy, emotional freedom and confidence that things will get better.

I was reading in John 8 about a woman who was caught in adultery. By the way, you would have to be in despair to commit adultery. Hope gives you joy for a better day. She had little hope. While in the arms of another man, she was caught and taken to Jesus. How would Jesus deal with her? Tell her that she is going to get what she deserves or offer her hope of a better day?

She was offered a chance to start over. To press the re-do button on life. That is the hope that Jesus offers. He offers a second chance. A chance to change the direction of your life. What she did was wrong and she would need to make things right. But at least she can start over.

Do you need to start over in life? That is what we are going to talk about next week. We will talk about how God provides an opportunity to start over.

As you close: Thank God for hope; thank him that life can get better than this. Thank him for his birth and life here on planet earth.

I like Jazz. Especially when Harry Conick Jr. is singing Christmas Songs. Jazz and Christmas songs go together like peanut butter and jam. I can sit by the tree, just listening for several moments. For me, that is a long time. Ahhhh.

But for others, Christmas isn't so cheery. Christmas remind us of the brokenness in life. We are reminded that we have loss. Loss of a job, loss of a loved one, loss of stability, etc. We wonder, "Does God even care?"

King David had a moment of depression. He was running for his life from his son. He was in a foreign country that he had attacked. He was all alone. I wonder if he thought to himself, "God, do you even care about me?"

Look at verse 18. "The lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

He is close. He is near. He is up close and personal. He knows exactly what is going on in your life. He knows about all the broken pieces of your life. He does care as the Apostle Paul tells us, "Cast all your care upon Him because he cares for you." He isn't far away. He isn't distant. He is right there with you. Weeping with you as you weep and rejoicing with you as you rejoice.

He is also going to restore your brokenness. He is going to save the day. We don't know how and we don't know when. We just know that He is going to save those who are crushed in spirit. He is working on putting the pieces back together again. Even those little slivers that many will not be aware of, He is putting those back into place.

I hope you realize that better days do await you and that is why we can hope in Him. Whatever the piece you are holding in your hand that reflects your brokenness, He cares deeply about it and is putting it back together. Some day you will be mended and whole. But until then our Hope is still in Him!

As you close: Tell God about all the broken pieces of your life. Weep with Him. He will weep with you.

I've noticed something. Everyone is impacted by Christmas. They may celebrate differently than me, but this season, this time of year revolves around Hope. Everyone believes, to some degree, that life has got to get better than this. The question is who will make it, life, better?

I have a tendency to snap at my family. I don't know why. I'm not stressed out. I'm not under pressure. I just snap at them. I thought about it and realized that something needed to change. So I decided I needed to change. I needed to stop snapping at my family. So off I go on this grand adventure. Unfortunately, I drop the ball. I fail. I snap. Back to the drawing board.

If I think I am going to make life better, I will find myself constantly disappointed. It's not that I don't have a part to play in change, it's just that I, only me, can not make the changes necessary for life to be better. There is only one person I can hope in. His name is Jesus.

The people of Israel were in some pretty tough circumstances. They were an oppressed people for hundreds of years. They must have thought, "I need to have a positive attitude and things will get better." "I just need to be nicer to that Roman guard who is beating me up. That will make life better." No. They knew if life was going to be better, it would come from one person; the Messiah.

Simeon and Anna were just thrilled to see the Savior of the World. He is going to make things better. He will make life more joyful. It will be because of Him.

Who do you hope in to make life better? We all hope better days are ahead. We all hope for something great in the days to come. We need to know who we Hope IN to see those good days. Do you find your hope in your job? Family? Money? or Jesus?

As you close: Take some time and tell Jesus that your hope for better days is in Him. Ask for strength each day to find your hope in Him.

HOPE - Healing for the brokenhearted - Day 1

The Christmas season is filled with much anticipation. Christmas day is within reach. It's like waiting for vacation to arrive. You know it's coming but it just won't get here soon enough. So let me be the first to say, "Merry Christmas." Enjoy the season.

While some are enjoying the moment, some, the holidays are a reminder of loneliness and isolation. Some are saying, "I just can't wait for the holidays to get over with." No anticipation, no excitement. If that is you, I've got some good news for you.

This month is all about hope. What is hope? Hope is believing that better days lie ahead. Hope is having confidence that it's got to get better than this. Maybe you've lost a loved one, a relationship is fractured, or a loss of a job, status or stability, better days lie ahead. It will get better than youur present circumstances.

Say this out loud, "Better days lie ahead." We have hope that better days lie ahead. And yes, even for you.

The Chicago Cubs have been living on hope for the past 100 years. They hope to return to the World Series. But 100 years is nothing compared to the Israelite people waiting for God to fulfill His promise of rescuing them with a Savior.

If you know anything about Israelite history, you will know that they were oppressed for around 700 years prior to the birth of Jesus Christ, the promised Savior. They waiting through the Assyrians, Babylonians, Medo-Persians, Greeks, and Romans. They were taken advantage of by countless people. They paid enormous taxes, used as slaves, and used for self gratification. Bottom line, they were not allowed to be a free people. They waited, they cried out, to God for the promised Messiah. And then there was a baby's cry. Mary gave birth to a son, gave Him the name Jesus. He was the one the angels told Joseph and Mary about. He will save the day. Their Hope will be found in Him.

They had every reason to be depressed and anticipate nothing. But their hope was renewed. Hope had become a reality in a baby boy. They had every reason to be filled with anticipation and be filled with excitement. Better days lie ahead.

For today I want to renew your hope. Better days lie ahead. Not because of you or me. But because of Him. Jesus is our hope and He is here to give us better days ahead.

As you close: Thank God for the gift of His son Jesus. Thank Him for renewing our hope for better days. Thank God for this season and ask Him to fill your heart with joy and anticipation.

Fully Surrender:Moses - Day 4

Do you have a favorite song? Perhaps it is one when you were building a relationship with a future spouse. Maybe it is a song during an intense time in your life. Or, it is a song that represents a change that occurred in your life.

Songs can be like markers in the brain. Whenever we sing it, hear it played or just remember it, it reminds us of a time in our lives when it meant something great.

For Moses, songs became a way to remember the stories of God's glory in his life.

What a way to remember what God did for the people of Israel. He revealed His glory and now they can sing songs about it. And singing songs of remembrance empower us to trust Him again. We remember and choose to fully surrender again and again. It's like a little child saying to their dad, "Do it again, daddy. Do it again."

What songs can you sing, of what God has done in your life? I realize that there probably isn't an exact song for your situation but maybe you can just put your story to music. Just sing the words back to Him for how He revealed His glory in your life.

As you close: Remember His works among you. Remember what He has done and praise Him for it.

Fully Surrender:Moses - Day 3

Sometimes loneliness is an awful thing. Have you ever felt alone? You may be surrounded by people and still feel alone.

People in leadership may have power and influence, but believe me, they feel terribly lonely. It's not that people don't like them, often times leadership means that you will be alone. For example, the president of your company has to look at facts and figures and make tough decisions. Sometimes employees don't like what they hear. Many people have experienced lay offs. What a terrible experience. Not knowing what is next, not knowing if they will have enough money to pay the bills. Often employees attack owners saying, "They just want more money for themselves." That may be true, but often times the owners I know can't sleep because they know what damage it might cause. It is at those times a leader feels alone.

Loneliness is a part of leadership. Leaders never get used to it but they learn to accept it. For Moses, it seems like he is ready to call it quits. He was ready to throw in the towel. So what does Moses do? He talks to God about it. Chapter 6 is God's response. To sum it up; God told Moses that He will accomplish what He has set out to do. He will rescue His people Israel through the leadership of Moses. Moses needed to simply stay the course.

When you are fully surrendered to God, He may ask you to do something that causes you to be very alone. Everyone has an opinion and they are ready to share it with you. People may question you and try to raise doubts in your mind. Examine the doubts and deal with them.

Here are three things you should do when feeling alone regarding what God is having you to do:
1. Pray. Ask God for His help. We need His strength.
2. Contemplate opinions - Do they have a point that I haven't considered?
3. Pray. Ask God to make things clear.

Why? Because we want to do the very thing God wants us to do. We want to consider that God will make
it very clear if it is just simply our idea or that it is in fact His.

As you close: What is it that is tugging at your heart? Is it from God? Have you asked other people about? Have you considered other's advice? Have you prayed? Do that now.

Fully Surrender:Moses - Day 2

Something I really enjoy as a pastor is when parents dedicate their children to the Lord. During a child dedication service, parents put together photographs of the child who is being dedicated. After the picture presentation, I have the privilege of speaking with the parents. They tell the rest of us what this child means to them and then promise to raise this child to hear about God's love through Jesus. Then I get to pray for them. I really love those moments.

But one thing is true, that child will still have to make a decision to fully surrender to Jesus on their own. Even though they are being dedicated to the Lord, doesn't mean they automatically surrender to Jesus. There will come a time when the decision to fully surrender will sit before them and they will have to make a decision.

Moses was dedicated to the Lord but Moses would still have to make a choice in fully surrendering to Him.

God wanted to reveal His glory through Moses and Moses would have to make a decision on being fully surrendered or not. It was up to him. Moses does come to the place where he fully surrenders. He still has his doubts. He's afraid that he's not much use to the Lord. He doesn't talk well enough. Not smart enough. But God tells Him that He will be with him. Moses will not be alone. God will be there right beside him. He even has Aaron join him on the adventure.

You see, you have nothing to be afraid of. God will be with you wherever He leads you. He even provides a friend to help. How many times do we count on our friends to help us get through something? Many times.

I pray that I won't let the doubts in my mind distract me from being used by God to reveal His glory. I hope you won't let those doubts do the same to you.

Plus, I pray that my heart is fully surrendered, each and every day. I hope my children, though they have been dedicated to the Lord, will fully surrender too.

You have nothing to lose when you fully surrender to Jesus. Actually, you have much to gain. We would be fools not to take this offer. Surrender today.

As you close: Pray that everyday, you can be used by God if He desires to reveal His glory through you that day. If not, okay. We wait for Him. And Pray that your children, whom I'm sure you dedicated to the Lord, will daily fully surrender to Him.

Fully Surrender:Moses - Day 1

This week we wrap up our fully surrendered series. I have enjoyed these inspiring people who had given their lives over to God. Through them, God's glory was revealed and their stories are still with us today.

This week we will be discussing the life of Moses. As a baby, Moses was surrendered to God.

Amram and Jochebed, Moses' parents, were experiencing the joys of parenthood. They had a daughter, Miriam and now Miriam was going to be a big sister. Soon, their joys became sorrows as Jochebed delivered a boy. Why is that a sorrow?

The Pharoah, wanting to reduce the Israelite population, was having all boys thrown into the Nile River to be killed. When Amram and Jochebed delivered a boy, their worst fears became real. Not towards the child, but towards the possibility of the death of their child. So they hid the boy. They covered their tracks as best as they could until one day they could hide him no longer. There was nothing more they could do. What would they do now?

What do you do when you have no other option in a difficult situation? I have a tendency to panic. My heart starts to race and I begin to be overwhelmed with worry. It takes me a while, because of my pride, when I turn to God. I know I should turn to Him first but often times, I depend on my own understanding and exhaust all the options for me to do. Then I pray. I should pray and then do all that I can and leave the rest to Him.

Amram and Jochebed did everything they could and now the only thing left to do was to surrender this child into the hands of God. They built a basket and put him inside and let go of him on the Nile River. I bet Jochebed had trouble letting go of the basket; wondering if she would ever see him again. But then God did something Jochebed had no idea He was about to do. He had Pharoah's daughter go into the water of the Nile to bathe, and while she was there washing, heard a baby crying. Compassion filled her heart, instead of having the boy killed, she took him into her home and raised him. Gave him the name Moses. Jochebed even had the opportunity to see him grow up and become a man.

What a story of surrender.  Amram and Jochebed saw the glory of God because they surrendered their child over to his care. We don't know what would've happened if they hadn't. All we know is what they did and as result, God rescued His people from the evil Pharoah and led them to the Promised land. All through this man, Moses.

Is there a basket in your hand that God is calling you to let go of and give over to Him? It could be your career.  "God, I have no idea what you want to do through me, but you can have my career.  Keep it where it is or change it. I want your plan for my life." It could be your children. "God here are my kids.  I will raise them as best as I can but they are dedicated to you.  Show your glory through them." It could be your health. "God, I have no idea what I will go through physically, but if there is something you want me to go through to show your glory, then do it."

Often times we want to hold onto the basket for fear of the unknown. God wants us to simply trust Him. He is trustworthy.

As you close: Thank God a new day, life, health and family. Tell God that you are willing to let go of the basket and whatever it is inside of it. All you want is for His glory to be revealed through you.

Fully Surrendered: Missionaries Day 2

We're talking about missionaries this week. Yesterday we talked about Jim Elliot. What a terrific story.

Today you will learn about David Livingstone. Who's that?

David Livingstone was born in 1813 and lived until 1873. Growing up in a christian home, David believed that science and the study of God could mix. He believed that medical study could help advance religious ends. He got connected to a book written by Karl Gutzlaff that requested the need for medical missionaires to China. With every intention to leave for China, war broke out which closed to the door in that direction. While continuing his education, David then met a man from South Africa. A new fire began to build in David's heart to go to Africa and reach people who have never heard of Jesus, was now his new focus.

Livingstone was not only a missionary, but he was also an explorer. Soon he found himself discovering Africa. In his travels, he discovered a water fall that took his breathe away. It's recorded that he said, " "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight." He called the waterfalls, Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria.

David took the gospel to a place that was off the beaten path and could cost him his life. He is remembered saying, "If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men who will come if there is no road at all."

Are you the kind of person who is a pioneer? Who loves to make a road instead of finding one?

Much of this world has been explored but many people in this world still need to hear the gospel. Will we be the kind of people who are willing to go anywhere for Jesus?

Be fully surrendered to Jesus.

As you close: Thank God for missionaries who have gone before us to reach a people group who were unreachable. Thank God for their example and their dedication to Him.

Fully Surrendered: Missionaries Day 1

The week I am going to be high lighting some people who have fully surrendered their lives to Jesus and heard His call to take the gospel overseas. I hope these stories will inspire you to fully surrender to Jesus too.

The first person is Jim Elliot. Jim was born in 1927 and died in 1956. He only lived 28 years, but in those 28 years, countless lives were impacted. People still talk about his story to this day.

Jim surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and attended Wheaton College in Wheaton Illinois. There during his junior year he met a girl, Elisabeth Howard and fell in love. They both committed to serving the Lord in Central America, more specifically, the Auca Indians in Ecuador.

While in Ecuador, Jim and 4 other couples did everything they could to reach the Auca Indians. First contact was made and relationship had been built. Until one fateful day, the five missionary men went to be with the Lord when the Auca Indians attacked and killed all five men.

The wives were back at base camp waiting for word. They had never heard from them again.

Picking up the pieces, Elisabeth Elliot returned to the work of reaching the Auca Indians with the gospel and as a result the whole village was turned upside down for Jesus. Elisabeth had even met the men who had killed her husband and the four other men. What a moment of reconciliation that must have been.

Today their story is so powerful of men and women fully surrendered to God that they have a movie made. "End of the Spear" tells the story of their journey in reaching the Auca Indians with the gospel. If you haven't watched it, take some time and do so.

One famous quote that Jim Elliot wrote in one of his journals said, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."

As you close: Thank God for missionaries like Jim Elliot who have fully surrendered their lives to the Kingdom and ask God to help you be a story for Him right here where you live.

Fully Surrender:Esther - Day 5

I like happy endings, don't you? My wife and I were watching a movie the other night and I thought, "I hope this has a happy ending." The way things were going, it needed to have a happy ending.

The Book of Esther is an action story. Will the Jews be saved in the end? They were facing an impossible situation. How will God get them out of this? He did and He did it through Esther.

Esther did a brave thing by going to the King unrequested. In those days, a person could be killed just by showing up. It puts pastoral visitation in a new light. I will call before I come. I don't need a killer dog or a 12 gauge shotgun as a hello. Well anyway, she approached the King on behalf of the Jews and to make a long story short, the Jews were saved.

This moment in history is actually remembered every year for the Jewish community. It is called, "Purim." Purim is a celebration when they fast/pray, like Esther did, and come together as a community to celebrate life and God's blessings. They still celebrate it today. That Celebration is directly from Esther's moment in history. She was and is still being used by God to reveal His glory.

I don't know about you, but I want to be used by God to reveal His glory. Whether it be for a moment in time and forgotten or remembered forever. It's not about me, it's about Him. So whatever He decides to do through me, all glory goes to Him anyway.

By now, you should be feeling a tugging on your heart. Are you fully surrendered to Him? Can God use you to reveal His glory to the world? What is holding you back? Let go, and give your entire life to Him. You won't regret it.

As you close this week: Thank God for Esther's story. Ask God to help you be ready to be used by Him to reveal His glory. And then just keep your eyes open to what He is doing. He works in mysterious ways.

Fully Surrender:Esther - Day 4

Defining moments. These are moments that are locked into our brains that we will never forget. It may be the day/moment that we realized that that was the person we wanted to spend the rest of our lives with. It may be a trial or challenge that we learned a valuable truth that we have applied to our lives. Defining moments.

Esther was having one of those moments. From a poor young foreign girl to a queen is staggering. This was going to be a defining moment for her. Not just being queen but why she was made queen.

In the book of Daniel, God communicates that He establishes kings and removes kings. Or even queens for that matter. God strategically puts people in places to use to reveal His glory. The thing to remember though is they may be in a position to reveal God's glory, but they still have to decide on fully surrendering or not.

God put Esther in a position of influence and her defining moment is about to happen. She had just heard from her uncle about their sorrow and he pleads with her to do something about it. What will she do? How will she respond to her uncle?

If I perish, I perish. Those are powerful words. Those are words of surrender. Those are words that speak, "I will do what I can and whatever happens, happens. It will be in God's hands then." And that is exactly what happens when we fully surrender. Our lives along with the situation become God's matter. It's in God's hands and He will do with it what He wants.

The point: the cost to oneself doesn't determine the outcome of fully surrendering to God. If we allow the possibilities to dictate, we will never fully surrender. If it costs us our lives, so be it. If it doesn't, so be it. I will do something because God wants to show His glory through me.

How far are you willing to fully surrender? Only if He doesn't make me look foolish. Only if He doesn't make me move away from my home. Only if He doesn't let anything bad happen to me. Only, only, only.

I hope that we take all those only's and flush them down the drain. He is King of a Kingdom that will never end. He decides what needs to happen and who He will show His glory through. He know's your only's. But are your only's holding Him back from showing His glory through you?

You will see God's glory in a wonderful way when you fully surrender to Him. What do you choose?

As you close: Tell God right now that you fully surrender to Him. You don't care what happens to your body, your home, or material possessions. Tell Him that your life is in His hands and you couldn't be in any better hands than His.

Fully Surrender:Esther - Day 3

Have you ever experienced an absent from reality moment? What do I mean? When you are staring at the computer and a child is talking to you and you had no idea that they were talking to you? When your driving and you didn't notice the flashing lighting in your rear view mirror? When you are reading your bible and you have no idea what you just read?

Everyone at some point or another has had an absent from reality moment. Something or someone wakes us up to reality and we scramble to get our equilibrium of the situation. Esther was in such a moment.

What does a Queen do all day? From the Official Website of the British Monarchy, a day in the life of a Queen is rather diverse. This is what they have to say, "Some are public duties, such as ceremonies, receptions and visits within the United Kingdom or abroad. Other duties are carried out away from the cameras, but they are no less important. These include reading letters from the public, official papers and briefing notes; audiences with political ministers or ambassadors; and meetings with her Private Secretaries to discuss daily business and her future diary plans. Even when she is away from London, in residence at Balmoral or Sandringham, she receives official papers nearly every day of every year and remains fully briefed on matters affecting her realms. In front of the camera or away from it, The Queen's duties go on, and no two days in her life are ever the same." Interesting huh?

Esther was enjoying her life as a Queen. We don't know exactly what that entailed. But unfornately she was experiencing an absent from reality moment.

Esther had no idea what was happening. She was seeing her uncle/father figure in sackcloth and ashes. This is a demonstration of sorrow and she had no idea what he, and many of the Jews were upset about. She sent a servant to inquire and Mordecai told her all about it. She had no idea her people were in danger.

Sometimes we have those moments as well. We have moments when we have no idea what is going on outside our little bubble. In order for us to be fully used by God, we should have some idea what is happening in the world around us. The Book of Esther gives us no indication that God is displeased with her not knowing. He was still going to do a great thing to reveal His glory through her. But I think it is worth mentioning that she was lost in her Queenliness that she forgot that there is a bigger picture going on here.

We can easily get caught up in the moments of life that we are absent to the reality of what God is doing and wants to do. Scripture teaches us to be in the world but not of it. We live in a world that is being redeemed and God is using you and me to reach this world. But if we stay in the palace, the bubble of our own reality, we may miss the very moment that God has been preparing us for.

I for one don't want to miss that moment because I'm absent from His reality. How about you?

Do this: When you think about it, take a moment and look around you. God has placed you where you are and when you are to build His Kingdom and to be used to reveal His glory. Are you aware of your surroundings and watching what God is doing? Take a moment and look. Who does He have in mind to reach through you? What situation needs to be dealt with that He has put you in a position to deal with?

As you close: Ask God, "God, do you have me in a position and a place to reveal your glory? Help me not to get caught up in palace living. Help me to keep in touch with your reality and live fully surrendered to You!"

Fully Surrender:Esther - Day 2

Do you ever watch the Miss USA Pageant or something like it? I don't because I really don't need to be looking at some other woman. Are they beautiful? Yes. Are they intelligent? Yes. Do they want world peace? Yes; who doesn't? You may find those pageants enjoyable and that's fine to feel that way. Some find it degrading. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

For Esther, she found herself in a pageant. The King wanted a new queen and wanted to have some options. "I liked her answer to the third question, I choose her." I don't know how it exactly took place but in the end the King chose Esther.

Think about the scenario. Esther is being raised by an uncle. They are living in a foreign land. Probably poor. They may have something but probably not like what they could've had in Jerusalem. Is there a mother figure in the home? We don't know. She isn't recognized. Most women in that culture weren't even educated. Poor and uneducated, she is picked to be the next queen of the most powerful empire on the planet. Life was looking up. It would have been so easy to get lost in the pomp and circumstance of the day. She might have even forgotten her previous circumstances and the people in her life. The only question that begs to be asked is, "Why? Why her? Why now?"

God works in mysterious ways. Would you agree? There are times when everything you touch turns to gold. There are times that everything is going your way. When I'm in moments like these, I ask myself, "God what are you prepping me for? What are you about to do? When is the other shoe going to drop?"

God is working on something great by putting a poor, uneducated girl, Esther, in a position of influence. God doesn't care about gold and perfume. He cares about you and me. He cares about the heart. He cares about what we will become. God strategically does things, works in mysterious ways, to do a great work in and through us. All to show His glory.

Esther could've take this pridefully. She could've said, "I am beautiful. It's about time someone figured that out." She didn't do that. We really don't know how she felt about it all. Probably very overwhelmed. But in that moment God whispers, "I about to do something great. My glory is about to be revealed. Can I reveal my glory through you?"

That is the question. Can He reveal His glory through you? Don't be mistaken. You are where you are at, you have what you have, you know what you know as God intends. All He wants to know is, "Can I reveal my glory through you? Are you fully surrendered?"

As you close: Do a gut check today. Is your heart fully surrendered? Or, are you so caught up in your own little pomp and circumstance to notice that God desires to show His glory through you? Evaluate your heart and talk to God about your fully surrendering to Him today.

Fully Surrender:Esther - Day 1

How old are you? My second born, Grace is 10 years old today. To her, she has lived a long time. To me, it seems like she was born just yesterday. Age is all a matter of perspective. As a 10 year old, I'm sure my daughter believes that she can do a lot but not like an adult. She has told me that when she gets older, she is going to do this and do that.

My daughter has no idea that God wants to show His glory through her, even at 10 years old.

Esther is a young girl who lived a long time ago, about 2500 years ago. We don't know how young but she wasn't married and most girls are looking to be married in the late teens. I would assume that she was in her middle to late teens and God was going to use her to reveal His glory.

The story of Esther's life is found in 483 BC in the city called Susa. Susa is the capital city of the Mede/Persian Empire. It is about a 150 miles north of the Persian Gulf. It was a beautiful city and this is where we find Esther. Her Hebrew name is Hadassah and her Persian name is Esther and her name means "star." God was going to make her shine for His glory.

Do you find yourself too young, too uneducated, too unqualified to be used by God to reveal His glory? Unfortunately, many people do. God wants to use you. He wants to reveal His glory through you regardless of what you have or what you don't have. He chooses you. Will you choose Him?

You and I have to choose to be used by Him to reveal His glory. What is your choice for today?

As you close: Open your heart up to Him. Ask God to reveal His glory through you today or tomorrow or next year. Just tell Him that you are willing to be used by Him to reveal His glory whenever He wants to.

Fully Surrender:Daniel - Day 5

I am tempted everyday to follow the pattern of this world or follow God. Each day I wake up to a world of decisions. What will I do? Sometimes I follow the world. I fit right in and nobody notices anything different. Then there are days that I follow God. I fully surrender and choose to do the things He desires for me to do. People notice something different because it isn't with the flow. Each day I have this battle.

The same is true for you too. If you choose to fully surrender your life to Jesus Christ, you will have to reaffirm that choice throughout your day, every day. The world will tempt you to follow it instead of God. The devil will tempt you to listen to him instead of listening to God. You will have this battle every day.

Daniel was a fully surrendered kind of guy. He stood up to foreign kings and told them exactly what God wanted them to know which could have cost him his life. He made the choice to live for God's kingdom. But just like you and me, he too was faced with moments of just fitting in and following the flow of the world around him or staying fully surrendered to God and standing up for it.

King Darius had been king over the entire empire of the Medes and Persians. These two peoples had conquered Babylon and now benefitted from Daniel's services. Greed and jealousy can be found in any era and that is exactly what was going on with Daniel chapter 6.

Daniel had a decision to make. Would he stand up for his biblical/godly values or would he go along with the rest of the world? He chose to keep his values and as a result he was thrown into the lions den.

You know the end of the story. Daniel was kept safe by God. As a result, God's glory was revealed through him to another foreign king who recognized the God over all and the kingdom that is over all. All because one man was fully surrendered to God. One man who was living for another kindgom. He saw God's glory in a powerful way.

That is exactly what I want for my life. I want to be fully surrendered to Jesus and see His glory revealed through me. What a blessing that is.

Will I surrender, every day to God's plan and trust Him to do what is necessary to take care of me, my family in order to see His glory? The same goes for you.

As you close: Pray about your current level of surrender. Are you afraid to fully surrender? Pray about that fear. Are you unsure of what He is going to do through you? Pray about that as well. Talk to Him about fully surrendering everyday and strength to keep that commitment.

Fully Surrender:Daniel - Day 4

One day while my wife was cooking, one of my children reached for the pan of food she was using on the stove. She quickly told them, "Don't touch that, it's hot." They touch it and yelped. My wife promptly reacted, "I told you it was hot."

I watched the same situation, and I followed suit. I know, but I'm dumb sometimes. I went over to the same pan and touched it. I knew it was hot and I knew I could get hurt. I just watched my child do it. My wife looked at me with that dumbfounded look and said, "What are you doing?" For some reason I just couldn't learn the lesson through my child, I had to learn it myself.

That is exactly what happened to Belshazzar, King Neby's son. The kingdom had transfered from Neby to Belshazzar. Belshazzar had watched his dad go insane and eat grass like cattle for seven years. Belshazzar watched his dad repent and humble himself before the God of the universe. But did Belshazzar learn from his father's mistakes?

Daniel had the tough assignment; to confront Belshazzar with the news of his immediate end. Why? Belshazzar was proud of his work and his kingdom. There was no place for God in his world. So, he would be killed and a new power would arise, the Mede's and Persians. He wasn't on the throne for long. Why was that? God gave King Neby some time to change, why not Belshazzar? We don't know how long he sat on the throne but there is something to be said about learning lessons through other people. We learn life lessons through other people's stories. He should've learned through his dad's story but he didn't. So the patience of God appears a little shorter with Belshazzar.

How are you in learning life lessons through other people? In my earlier story, I have had moments where I didn't learn what I should've learned. Sometimes I have to learn the hard way. I hope I am a little wiser in my older age.

God has things for us to learn and sometimes it is not personal but through the easier way of others. Watch and learn. Sometimes we have to learn the hard way, but I opt for the easy way. How about you?

As you close: Ask God to give you wisdom to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Ask Him to help you learn through the experiences of others. And then ask Him for patience as we at times need to learn it the hard way.

Fully Surrender:Daniel - Day 3

I enjoy looking at trees in the fall when they change their color. Our peak season for leaves has come and gone and now everything looks bare. Leaves are brown and on the ground ready to be hauled away. What's left? The branches. But even then the tree is amazing. When the leaves are gone, you truly find out how massive it really is.

King Neby had no idea what the dream meant. He trusts Daniel. He needs to know what it means. Here is another opportunity for Daniel to be used by God in a glorious way. Unfortunately, the dream was a warning. Daniel would have to say what was necessary to King Neby and King Neby may not like what he has to say.

Have you ever had to be the one to say something to another that was going to be difficult to say? None of us like it. Their reaction may affect our decision to be that person. But if we love the other person, we will endure the scorn and compassionately speak the truth in love. Daniel cared about Neby and was fully surrendered to God so there was no other option but to speak the truth in love.

How did King Neby respond? He didn't listen to Daniel's advice of fully surrendering to God and he paid for his. God allowed him to go insane for seven years until he came back to his senses. And when he did, he glorified God and gave Him His rightful place.

Scripture teaches us that we need to speak the truth in love and sometimes it may be painful. Will that hinder you from seeing God use you in glorious ways? Daniel was fully surrendered to God and witnessed His glory, now it's your turn.

As you close: Pray that God will give you a compassionate heart towards those around you and a listening ear to the voice of the Holy Spirit. He may have some wise words that He would like to speak through you into the heart of a loved one. Those words may very well be the exact thing they needed to hear when they heard to turn things around.

Fully Surrender:Daniel - Day 2

Do you like puzzles or riddles? Well, try this one on for size. A man makes it and sells it. A man buys it and let's someone use it. The person using it doesn't know that they are using it. What is it? (Answer at the end)

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a dream one night. It puzzled him. He had no idea what it meant. But he could do nothing until the puzzle was solved or the riddle was answered. What was the dream? The dream was about a statue. Head, Chest and Arms, Belly and Thighs, Legs, and Feet. Each area was made of a kind of precious metal. But what did it mean?

Now the King had asked his advisors to tell him the dream and it's interpretation. No one could do that but one person, Daniel. God had given him a new direction in life. He wasn't going to be a priest, he was going to be the dream doctor for God. But there was one problem. Daniel didn't know the dream and dream doctors require that piece to the puzzle. Charles McPhee, Host of Nationally Syndicated Radio Program 'The Dream Doctor,' interprets dreams for a living. But there is one thing he needs to accomplish his task. He needs to hear about the dream. Then he can give its meaning.

For King Neby, he wanted someone to tell him what his dream was and then to interpret. No one can do that. But then there is Daniel. Daniel has been given the job to interpret dreams. But in this situation, He was would need God to tell him what the dream was. As a result, Daniel was able to witness to King Neby about the greatest of God and the greatness of His Kingdom. After Daniel told him the dream and its meaning, King Neby said, "Surely your God is the God of gods and Lord of kings..." King Neby's life was forever impacted because one man was fully surrendered to God and used by God to impact an entire empire for God's glory.

None of that would have happened unless Daniel had accepted God's plan for his life. God may be taking you on a journey that you don't get. You may even be angry with Him. Don't be. He has every step of the way planned out, prepared and is preparing you to be used by Him for His glory. It may not make sense right now and you may want answers to the puzzles and riddles in your life. Know this, He will make Himself abundantly clear in His time. Just follow Him. Fully surrender to Him. And in time the answers will come and you will be amazed how God displayed His glory through you.

By the way the answer to the riddle is...................a coffin.

Fully Surrender:Daniel - Day 1

When you were a child, what did you most want to be or do when you grew up? Take a minute and think back and try to remember.

I loved baseball. I lived it everyday. I couldn't wait to wake up in the morning and put on the glove. I've noticed my son is the same way. It must be a boy thing. That love for baseball gave me dreams of being a Major Leaguer for the LA Dodgers. I know, you may not be a fan, but they were my favorite team. I was in little league, travel leagues and High School. Mid way through my High School career, my passion for baseball faded. What? Yes it did. There went all my dreams of making it to the big show. But I had a different passion at that time. As soon as baseball faded, another one sprang to life; being a pastor.

Did this happen to you too? Many people have had similar experiences. They grew up with one passion and ended up doing something else. Why does that happen?

It happens because our dream was truly childish. We grow up and realize that it was just a childs' dream. Another reason is that we just got burned out by it. We gave it all of our lives early and when the time came for it to be a career, we had nothing left to give. Many potential sports heros tell their story of quiting because they burned out on it. I'm sure that is true in many areas.

I also think that our passions change because we wanted to do what we were gifted to do but not what we were made to do. That is where God enters the picture.

For Daniel, he probably had dreams of getting a job and raising a family in a suburb of Jerusalem and found himself in Babylonia as a servant in the kings court. Ezra 8:2 we find that Daniel is a descendant of Ithamar. Who's Ithamar? He is the son of Aaron. Aaron is Moses' bother and the head of the priestly line. The priestly line took care of the temple and the services inside. If you were a descendant in the priestly line, your job was set before you. So possibly, Daniel was getting ready to start his duties as a priest.

Daniels new job is found in verse 17: He could understand visions and dreams. That was his new job and in a foriegn country too.

How did Daniel respond? We don't know those fine details but as you read his book, he followed God's plan for his life instead of resenting it.

What career does God want you to have? Are you doing it? Are you willing to follow Him no matter what?
Don't misunderstand. I don't want you to quit your job right now. Especially when jobs are hard to come by. Just stop and pray. Ask God, "Am I doing what you want me to do?" And then just listen and wait.

As you close: Thank God for His plan for your life. Thank Him in advance for showing His glory through you as a fully surrendered follower of Christ.

Glorification Day 5

Wow, where did the week go? I'm sure you are too busy with activities, kleenex, and sleep to notice that the week is almost over. The weekend is coming. Yay! It is when our hearts say, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Life is good."

There are times in my life when I just stop and look out the window and meditate on my life. I think about where I am and where I've been. I think about my wife and kids and what life might have been like without them. Then I thank God for my wife and kids because they have made so much of my life worth living, second to Jesus. I have so much because of them. It's in that moment I find my soul saying, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Life is good." Then the phone rings and I'm back to reality.

Have you had moments like that? For me, I want more moments where my soul says, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Life is good." It helps me during the tough times to keep moving forward.

Some day we will say every day, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, life is good." That day is the day we leave this earth and spend eternity with the Savior.

We've talked all week about Glorification. It is God's gift to you and me when we get to heaven. It is when we will say everyday, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Life is good."

But we are not there yet. Every week we work hard and take a breath every weekend. The week builds up excitement for what is to come on the weekend.

We live this life everyday and we can't wait for the moment we get to heaven where we say, "Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Life is good." In the here and now, that is what the week does for us. This life is a build up of anticipation of what is to come. We live in the here and now, in view of over there. How are you living in the here and now?

The Time is coming of His return but until then we are to live with a watchful heart and a praying heart. What is He trying say? We should do our work in light of His return. We should live with our bags packed because we don't know if it is today or tomorrow.

As you walk this earth, keep looking up.

Glorification Day 4

How are you today? Did you sleep well? Did you eat your breakfast? Did you vote yesterday?

I voted and I am glad I did. I watched the results and at the conclusion, I looked to God and said, "Okay, I did my part. Now you do yours." I know He will do His part. He always does. I have no idea what will happen tomorrow or even today. I will have to trust Him. All I know is that I long for a better place.

That is what we are talking about today. A perfect place awaits us.

We've talked about a perfect spirit that won't struggle with sin and a perfect body that will never break down and die. The final part of this gift of glorification is a perfect place.

Jesus said in John 14:1-3 that He is going to prepare a place for us. Once He's completed it, He will come and get us and take us home. But what will this place be like?

There are three thoughts that I would like for you to think about:
1. God will be there. Revelation 21:3 says that God will dwell with His people. We get to look forward to being with God forever.
2. Others will be there. Revelation 22:3-4 says that we will serve Him with many others. The others are those who have given their hearts to Jesus. We will see family and friends that have given their hearts to Jesus in this perfect place.
3. It will be here on earth, remade of course, forever. Revelation 21:2 says that this city that Jesus is preparing will come down to earth and we will live with Him forever. It will be Eden all over again.

No more weeds. No more rotten food. No more flowers wilting. No more homes breaking down. Everything is peaceful, beautiful and something to be enjoyed. I can't wait can you?

God will give us a perfect spirit, a perfect body and now a perfect place to be with Him and other family and friends forever.

As you close: Take a minute and thank God for the perfect place that is waiting for us in heaven. It is a beauty that is unimaginable at this moment but someday we will realize it.

Glorification Day 3

Did you wake up this morning with aches and pains in parts or through out your body? I do almost every morning. My back hurts or shoulders are sore and I wonder if sleep is worth the pain. I thought sleep was supposed to help you not hurt you. Some would say, "You need a new mattress." What I need is a new body.

And I will get it as soon as I get to heaven. We've been talking about this gift called "Glorification" and it is God's gift to those who have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ. Day 2 we talked about part of the gift and that is a perfect spirit. We will not struggle with sin for the rest of eternity when we reach heaven.

Today we are talking about the second part of the gift and that is a perfect body.

Paul tells us that we will receive a new body in heaven. It will be a heavenly body. It will be imperishable. It will be immortal. Can you imagine that? It will be a body like Adam and Eve prior to "the fall". One that is perfect in every way and will never break down and die.

In our day and age of botox and plastic surgery, we are doing what we can to keep this body together. We have hospitals and doctors who are doing their best to keep us alive and healthy. We have people living longer these days, but unfortunately everyone's body still breaks down, decays and dies. Sad news, I know, but it's true.

Can you imagine a day when there will be no longer a need for doctors and nurses. By the way, I thank God for them. But there will be a day when we don't need their services anymore because we have a perfect body. We won't need nursing homes either because people won't grow old. They won't grow weak and frail. We won't need cemetaries either because no one will die. We won't need the Center for Disease Control because there won't be any more diseases. Can you imagine that?

But we are back to reality because that part of the gift is later. We will have a perfect spirit and we will have a perfect body.

Tomorrow we will talk about the third part of this gift and that is a perfect place.

As you close: Thank God for making you, your body. Thank God for watching over your health and being with you when you are battling something. Thank God for the gift someday, that a perfect body is waiting for us.

Glorification Day 2

What a beautiful day today. Today is voting day. I hope you got out and voted. I know that many people are discouraged with our government these days. But if you don't vote, you have no voice and really no right to complain. So make sure to get out and vote.

Glorification: A wonderful gift that God has for us in heaven. We just have to wait for it.

What exactly does this gift include? There are three specific parts to this gift.
1. A perfect Spirit
2. A perfect Body
3. A perfect Place

Today we will look at the first one: A perfect Spirit.

Paul explains in the book of Romans that you and I have a sinful nature. It is a rebellious spirit towards God. We don't want to listen. We don't want to obey. We simply don't care for God or the things He desires.

When we get to heaven, the bible explains that you and I will no longer struggle with this sinful nature. We won't rebel against God, we will want to obey. There will be no crime, no prisons, no law enforcement. People will live in righteousness.

John says that there will no longer be any curse. The curse of sin and death will be removed. All of us will be his people and live righteously. What a great gift.

That is what we get to look forward to. We get to be free from our sinful struggles and desire to live right and please God. I can't wait for that day.

Unfortunately, that is not how it is yet. We still have crime. We still have people looking over their shoulders hoping that danger isn't lurking in the shadows. We still lock our doors and keep guns in our basements. Why? Because we are not free from this sinful nature.

So what am I to do until then?
     1. Pray: For God's help to do the right things.
     2. Observe: Watch how you live and be held accountable.
     3. Be wise: Know that crime and evil still happen around us. Be wise how you live in light of it.

As you close: Pray for God's help right now in living a righteous life. Ask for wisdom in how to live in a fallen world and seek advice for how to live in this kind of environment.

Glorification Day 1

Good morning all. I'm sorry I am a day late for this day one of glorification. Our family was traveling back from Iowa and I couldn't make it to the computer.

If you were unable to attend Brighton Chapel on Sunday, you missed a great talk about glorification. So this week will help make that up for you.

These five words, Condemnation, Reconciliation, Justification, and Sanctification all lead up to this last word Glorification.

What does it mean? The word means, to be glorified or to be like Jesus. God has an end goal for our lives and that is to be conformed into the likeness of Jesus.

Paul writes in Romans 8 that we are being transformed into the likeness of Jesus. That is what awaits us in heaven. It is like a gift that God has prepared for us.

Do you like Christmas? I do. I like to give gifts to those I love most dearly. As a pastor I love you dearly, but I don't have the resources to get you all gifts so suffice it to say, my family are the ones I give gifts to. Sorry. LOL. Anywho, I love to give gifts to my family and put their names on it. I have a gift for each one and it is especially for them. They receive the gift because their name is on it. They don't put it there, I do.

However, glorification is like a gift that God has wrapped especially for you. Truth be told, He doesn't put your name on it, you do. The Bible tells us that when we surrender to Jesus, our names are written in the Lambs book of life and all the names written in that book have the gift of glorificaiton waiting for them. So, you are the determining factor if you receive this gift or not. And it all hinges on you surrendering your life to Jesus Christ and letting him lead your life. Have you done that? If you have, this gift called glorification has your name written on the tag and it awaits you in heaven. If you haven't surrendered your life to Christ, then there is no gift with your name on it.

So, maybe you're thinking, "I want this gift. How do I surrender to Jesus?"

Good question. Jesus asks a question to his disciples and he asks you the same thing. It is a question about belief. "Who do you say that I am?" Jesus wants to know what they really think. Do they believe he's the Savior of the world or do they think he is just a regular guy who is not who he claims to be. Peter said to Jesus, "You are the Christ (meaning the savior of the world)."

Who do you say that Jesus is? If you believe he is the savior of the world, just whisper this prayer to him: Jesus, I believe you are the Savior of the world and I want you to be my savior.

If you said that prayer and meant it, there is a gift called glorification that awaits you. Your name is written on a tag on a gift in Heaven waiting for you. Heaven is celebrating right now because of your decision.

Now that you have this gift "glorification", what exactly is in the box? How exactly will he conform me to be like Jesus?

Sanctification - Day 5

As we bring this week to a close, I want to take a moment and talk about your part in the sanctification process. God has his part to play and if He doesn't do His part, we up a creek without a paddle. We desperately need Him to do His part of leading us and guiding us to do the things that please Him.

What is our part?

Ephesians 4:30 says, "and do not grieve the Holy Spirit..." We grieve the Holy Spirit when we choose to listen to ourselves instead of Him. His job is to guide us, teach us, etc.

We read that the Holy Spirit is to lead and guide. He will even remind us what we've learned. As the Holy Spirit is doing His job, we have a choice to listen or reject Him. When we reject Him, we are grieving Him. It's like we are pushing Him away. God doesn't want us to do that. He wants us to listen.

Have you ever had to yield to someone when you were driving your car? There was a road in Plymouth that always confused people. They weren't sure if the other person was to yield or if they were to yield. Sometimes, it would cause such a confusion that there would be a near accident. I don't recall anyone getting into an actual accident but there may have been. Often times we don't want to be the one to yield. We've got things to do, places to be. We think, "That person doesn't understand where I am going and what I need to get done. They should yield to me."

What the Holy Spirit wants you and I to do is yield to Him. Let Him lead our lives and let Him tell us what to do. That is exactly what He wants and when we do, we do the right thing and please our Heavenly Father.

How's your yielding been lately?

As you close: Take time to pray and tell God that you desire to yield more to His Holy Spirit. Sometimes you choose not to. Pray that you will have the strength to yield the next time.

Sanctification - Day 4

Do you remember this song, "God is so good, God is so good. God is so good. He's so good to me." I used to sing that song when I was younger. A very simple song but the point is quite clear. And just think, the author has us repeat it over and over. Why is that? The repetition is so that we would never forget it. We have a tendency to forget important truths in the midst of life. We shouldn't forget this. God is so good to us.

The reason I remind you of that song is so that you will remember it while God is doing His work in you. You may get frustrated with God. You may even get angry with him. Just remember, everything that you are experiencing is going to be used for good in your life. God takes every moment and uses it to change us into the masterpiece He has in mind. So when you are tempted to get agrivated with God or even depressed, remember that God is good and he has a good reason in mind.

What is He trying to do in us as His children? What's the end goal?

Romans 8:29, "to be conformed to the likeness of his Son." The word "conformed" is like a potter with clay. He is shaping us up to be like Jesus. God is changing us in three particular areas.

1. God is changing our minds. He is teaching us how to think like Jesus. When Jesus was living here on earth, he had a choice, just like you and me. He chose to live a righteous life. Now Jesus is God and He will always do the right thing, but like Hebrews says, he understands the pressures and temptations, yet did not sin. God is helping us to do the right thing and the more we do the righteous things in this life, at times the easier it will be.

2. God is changing our hearts. He is transforming our heart from being self-centered to being others-centered. He had compassion on people and loved people. He longed to be their shepherd and lead their lives. When we look at people, we may at times think how we can benefit from them. We may think about what we can get instead of give. God is changing our hearts to feel like Jesus and love people like Jesus.

3. God is changing our lives. He is leading us on a path that is right. That is good. When He is finished, and we've followed Him, we will look back and be amazed at what He's done through us.

That is His end goal. That is the purpose of sanctification, to set us apart and make us holy. We've talked alot about God's part. Is there a part we play in the process of sanctification?

If God is going to change us, and conform us to His Son, Jesus, is there anything we can do to help the process? Yes. We will finish this week with exactly that. See you tomorrow.

Sanctification - Day 3

Good day to you!

Where are these verses found in the Scriptures? "Oh the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been been his counselor? Who has ever given to God that God should repay him? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen."

The answer to that question will be at the end of this segment. If you have a concordance, look it up. Find it. Meditate on it. Why? Because God is at work in your life.

Day 2 I told you that you are his workmanship. He is at work in you. I Thess. 4:3 says that it is His will that you be sanctified; something of value that is set apart as holy and sacred. He is working in you on purpose. What kind of work is he doing in you?

Romans 6:18 says, "You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness."

He has set you free from sin, but the problem is, you still battle with sin. You still struggle with sin. You still do things you don't want to do; things that displease the Lord. You sometimes do the things that please the Lord. So, what is going on inside of you that is causing this disturbance?

You are still tempted to sin, to rebel against God. You have a choice to obey or disobey. That is the position you are in when you surrendered your life to Christ. Before that, you instinctively rebelled against God. Now Jesus gives you an alternative. You have a choice now. You can choose to sin and rebel againsts God or you can choose to obey and listen to God. What will you choose to do? And this choice thing, happens everyday, all the time. How exhausting, right?

God wants you to listen to his leading, his word, because God is always right. It will always be the best thing to obey him. No one needs to give him counsel or instruction. He is the only one who is capable of giving us sound wisdom and counsel. And, everytime you listen to him, you are changed. You grow. You become more like him. Some day you will be free from sins influence, but until then, you have to make the choice to listen.

Take notice of your choices today. Are your choices in obedience to God's Word? If not, change. If so, keep up the good work. If you are not sure, pray.

Sanctification - Day 2

Think about these words today written from the Apostle Paul. "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

Remember, God sees immeasurable value in you. Not for what you can do for Him. But for what He can do for you. He loves you and has a wonderful plan to do great and awesome things in and through you. What He is capable of doing will blow your socks off. Anticipate a great day today.

Today I want to point out that the Father starts His work right where you are. You don't have to straighten out your life in order for the Father to do His work. He starts right where you are.

There is a friend of mine who stopped by my office in my previous church. He was visibly upset. As he sat on my couch, I found out that he was in trouble with the law. The possibility of going to jail was around the corner and he didn't want to go. I didn't blame him. I wouldn't want to go to. We talked about the situation he was involved in and about God's forgiveness. God's forgiveness doesn't mean that you won't have to deal with the consequences of your actions. It means that you have the peace of God to go through anything. That day this man, my friend to this day, gave his life to Jesus Christ. He didn't have to straighten out his life in order to feel the love and mercy of the Savior.

You may be a person who has been in trouble with the law. That doesn't stop Him. You may be a person who is struggling in your marriage. That doesn't stop Him. You may be a person who is stable and life is good. That doesn't stop Him.

God invites you to come to Him.

All Jesus tells us to do is to come to Him. He waits for us to turn to Him. When we do, we will find rest. We will find exactly what our heart has been longing to find. When we turn to Him, that is when He begins His workmanship.

Tomorrow we will talk more about His workmanship in our lives.

As you close: Pray for the people in your life that believe that God couldn't love them until they get their lives straightened out first. Pray that they would see that all God wants is for them to just come to Him. Wherever they are and at any time.

Sanctification - Day 1

Last Sunday we talked about Sanctification. The word means, to take something of value and set it apart being regarded as holy and sacred.

What I want you to consider today is that God sees you as valuable.

As a young boy, I struggled to find any thing of value in myself. I was athletic. I was friendly. I was compassionate. But, I didn't feel valuable. Why? If you were to look at my life, you would find that I had everything that I needed. I had a comfortable home. I had good food. I had clothes on my body. So why didn't I feel valuable?

I never knew if my dad loved me. My dad did and still does love me. I just never heard those words from him. It's funny how saying those words can mean so much and the neglect of saying those words can have an even greater impact. I felt like I was worthless. I grew up trying to impress, trying to be admired, trying to be loved. Not just by anyone, but by my dad.

It was my senior year of high school and I felt a prompting from the Lord. He knew exactly what I needed and he was going to meet my need that night. God whispered in my ear that I needed to thank my parents for everything they had done for me and to tell them that I loved them. I found my mom and hugged her and spoke those words into her ear. Then I found my dad and he said something I will never forget. He said, "I know I don't tell you this very much, but I love you and I am proud of you."

That night I felt love from my father and I felt valuable.

God the father wants you to know that He is whispering in your ear, "I love you. I always have. I always will. You are valuable to me."

Say these words out loud, "I am loved by my Father in Heaven and I am valuable to Him."

Reconciliation - Day 5

Everyone knows that a family needs to learn how to forgive. There will be moments when we offend each other, hurt each other, say something or do something that bothers others, and we will need to forgive.

The other day I thought Heather had done something wrong and I approached her about it. I didn't approach her in the most appropriate way. I approached hot with anger, ready to pronounce the judgment. Then I heard those words, "Dad, I didn't do it. It was..." Ugh. I could've said, "Well then, learn the lesson of this situation and don't think about doing that ever, or you will get it big time." I needed to apologize. I needed to say, "Heather, I'm sorry. I was wrong. Please forgive me." Most of the time my children are quick to forgive. (Tiffany is another story, but I won't get into that at this time. Just kidding.)

Jesus teaches us to forgive and that forgiveness should not be withheld. In this story that Jesus told, the man had been forgiven a great debt, but he was unable to forgive others. God dealt with that kind of attitude.

Is there someone in your life that you are having difficulty forgiving? God is serious about you forgiving that person. If you've experienced the forgiveness of God, you are to forgive others. It's terrible to hold on to such anger. Anger has destructive power. Some people have harbored such ill will towards others that the individual is removed from the family. Does God ever feel that way towards us?

Does God kick us out of the family for making sinful mistakes? Some people believe that you "lose your salvation" when you reject God's law/plan for your life. I personally don't believe that. I find in Luke 15 that Jesus teaches us that we are still a part of the family even though we wonder off. God doesn't support our decision to leave but He allows us the opportunity to make that decision. He will always be waiting for us to come home.
Perhaps you know of someone who was a part of our church or attended church somewhere and they are not attending anymore. Pray for them to come home.

Reconciliation has a lot to do with forgiveness. Are you willing to forgive as you have been forgiven?

As you close: Pray for reconciliation to happen in our church family. If you need to forgive someone, take a moment and pray for them. Ask God to help you to forgive them as He has forgiven you.

Reconciliation - Day 4

I hope this week has helped you understand the power of reconciliation. To see people reconcilied to God is an amazing thing and shows us just how loving God is. He is the God of second chances.

Last time we talked about being in this wonderful family of His, once we've been reconciled. Today we will talk about the blessings of Him as our father.

When I think about fatherhood, immediately I think of my father.    An obvious observation is that he provided for me. He provided a roof over my head. He provided food on the table and clothes on my back. Those things are everyday needs and I am grateful he provided them. Plus, my dad was always there at my sporting events. Whenever I played baseball, football, wrestling and many other activities, he was there to support me.

What was your father like? Take a moment and think about him.

When we believe in Jesus, the bible says that we are reconciled with God and become a part of His family.  He becomes our father. What kind of a father is He? Take a look at Him as a father in the garden of Gethsemane.

There are two major blessings I want you to see in this passage:
1. He is a protector.   Jesus prays for the fathers' protection from the enemy for us. And if Jesus feels it important to pray for our protection, don't you think we ought to too? He is a protector. He watches over us and nothing happens to us without His awareness. That is an awesome thought. Sometimes I wonder why God is allowing me to go through difficult moments, but that I should have hope knowing that He is aware that He is protecting me even when I don't realize it.

2. He is a provider. I see clearly that the father provides for our needs. He took care of Jesus and He will take care of us. Everything comes from Him and He deposits it into our lives so we can be taken care of. He knows exactly what we need, when we need it, and why we need it. Isn't that amazing? He is a great provider. Think back over your life and notice how God the Father has taken care of you.

These are just two major ways we benefit from Him as our Father. But in this family, we will make mistakes. We will stumble and fall at times. Will God forgive us or will He kick us out of His family because of our mistakes? Tomorrow we will wrap up this week regarding God's forgiveness.

Reconciliation - Day 3

"Today is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Is that the expression of your heart today? Why not stop and thank God for another day? This day is a gift from God to you.

Why should we be so moved by the gift of another day? Because everyday we have is another day to enjoy the family of God here on earth. When we surrender our life to Jesus Christ, the Bible teaches us that we become reconciled to God. When we believe in Jesus we are reconciled to God and we become a part of His family once again.

Once again? What does that mean? In the beginning, prior to the fall, Adam and Eve were a part of God's family. It was perfect. It was unbelievable. He provided for them and they lived in His provision. It was beautiful. And then sin, the choice of Adam and Eve to rebel against God destroyed that family. You know very well how sin destroys a family. An alcoholic, an adulterer, greed, along with many other destructive sinful habits destroys a family. Sin destroyed the family God had built.

Sin destroyed Cain and Abel and forever changed their family. That is what sin did with us and God. Sin destroyed His family and we were never the same. Until...Jesus. God has been relentlessly pursuing reconcilation with us and He finished it with Jesus. When Jesus died on the cross, His final words were, "It is finished!" The dividing wall has been broken down. Reconciliation between us and God is here.

John 1:12 says that we become the children of God when we believe in Jesus as our Savior and He becomes our father.

Luke 11:11-13, says that God is our Father and that He knows how to give us what we need. What exactly does He do for us? Tomorrow we will talk about the blessings of Him as our Father!

As you close today: Pray for Pastor Rustin. Pray that God will lead him as he leads our church family. Pray that God protects his mind and heart from sin. Pray for his family.

Reconciliation - Day 2

Good to see you again! Today we are talking about how God was able to bring about a reconciliation between Him and mankind.

Jesus was given the responsibility to come here and live a righteous life and then to die on a cross. Two things were needed from Jesus in order that we might be reconciled to God.

1. Jesus needed to live a life without ever sinning. Paul writes in 2 Corinthains 5:21 that Jesus knew NO sin. That means He lived a righteous life. There was never a time that He rebelled against God. He never had a sinful thought, word or even action. He was righteous.

We needed Him to live a righteous life because He would transfer our account for His. Ours is full of debt because of sin and as a result we would never be able to be with Him in heaven. Our debt is paid in full by Jesus on the cross. All of God's anger and hostility is put on Jesus because of us. He took all of our sin, past, present and future upon Himself. God has to punish sin and Jesus took it for you so you don't have to. Wow!

2. He needed to die in our place. As Paul writes in Romans 5 that one sin judged us all, so one act of righteousness could be a blessing for all. He died so that we would have life in Him instead of death through Adam. Death is death physically, spiritually and eternally. God accepted His sacrifice. We know that because of the resurrection. In that moment God raised Jesus from the dead God was saying, "I accept the sacrifice that was made for all of mankind through Jesus. Whoever believes in Him will never die but have eternal life with Him.

Reconciliation was possible because Jesus lived and died for you and me. That is what we call grace. We don't deserve the possibility of eternal life but it is available. It is not something you earn or buy. Reconciliation is a gift through faith in Jesus. When you surrender to Him, you and God are no longer enemies but a family.

Tomorrow we will talk more about this family we now become a part of.

As you close: Pray for our worship services. Pray that God will touch every heart that attends. Pray that many find Jesus for the first time. Pray that many will surrender completely to Jesus.

Reconciliation - Day 1

This week we will be taking a look at the word "Reconciliation." Reconciliation is an important word to consider because it is weaved throughout the entire Bible. If God made sure its theme was throughout His Word, then it must be something very important to Him and we need to pause and consider it.

What does the word, "Reconciliation" mean? The word means to make oneself or another no longer opposed; to become friendly after estrangement; to settle a quarrel or difference. The idea is to stop the hostilities between two people and reestablish peace.

God brought reconciliation to humanity. Paul writes, "...when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of his son..." God went to unbelievable lengths to bring reconciliation between us and him. Why?

First of all we are God's enemies and He wanted to change that. According to the scriptures we are either with God or against Him. To be with Him is to follow His leadership and His guidelines. To be against Him is to rebel against Him, do what we want, believe what we want and live how we want. To rebel against God is what we call sin. For that is exactly what sin is.

Second, enemies deserve the wrath of God and He wanted to give us an alternative. Paul writes, "for the wages (what we deserve) of sin is death." We identified that death last week as death physically, spiritually and eternally.

Finally, God loves us so much that He desires to give us a second chance. An opportunity to have our sins paid for and a new life to live and look forward to.

So HOW was He able to reconcile us? That is what we will look at tomorrow.

Condemnation - Day 5 (final for this week)

What happens when we fully surrender to Jesus? Yesterday I gave you a hint. It is found in the third chapter of the gospel of John.

Nicodemus apparently was convinced that there was something special with Jesus. The Jewish Ruling Council had been aware of Jesus and his activiites. They had been debating if Jesus was a lunatic or someone they should consider as a prophet/teacher. It's possible that Nicodemus had been selected to visit with Jesus in search of some answers or he came to Jesus on his own in his search of his own answers. Regardless, here he is with Jesus.

Jesus cuts to the chase and tells him, "...no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

Born again? What is that?

As a result of our condemnation, our spirit within us is dead. Paul says that we (our spirit) is dead in our sins.  We have no ability to have a living relationship with God until our spirit is made alive. So, how can our spirit be made alive?

Our spirit is alive when we are born again. When we surrender to Jesus Christ as Savior, our spirit is made alive, we are born again. It's that simple. When we believe in Jesus as he tells us in verse 15, "...that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life..." our spirit is made alive. We now have a personal living relationship with Jesus.

Actually, there are many things that happen in that instant we place our faith in Jesus. Let me highlight 3 of them in connection with our sentence on Day 3.

1. Death Physically: Jesus tells us that we will die physically but we will be resurrected with a new body, one that will never die.

2. Death Spiritually: Jesus tells us that we will be made alive, born again, as a result of believing in Him. We will have a living relationship that will never end.

3. Death Eternally: Jesus teaches us that when we believe in Him we will never perish, meaning never experience Hell, but we will have everlasting life with Him in Heaven.

Believing in Jesus is more than just saying a prayer to confirm your faith. It is a LIFE transformation that takes place. The Condemnation has been lifted and we have been Reconciled to him.

What does that word, Reconciled, mean? That is what we will explore this next week.

As you finish: Thank God for lifting the condemnation we are due because of our sin. We have been accused of breaking His law and He is right. The evidence is enormously against us.  The sentence fits the crime. But Jesus lifts that condemnation when we believe in Him. What an amazing Savior we have. Thank Him today.

Condemnation - Day 4

So far we've talked about some pretty heavy stuff. It appears that life under this "condemnation" is quite depressing. Most of us can handle a little discouragement but we thrive on encouragment. Is there anything encouraging about condemnation? Is there any hope?

Paul tells us in Romans 8:1, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus..."

The hope Paul is talking about is in Jesus Christ. Jesus offers us encouragement to our dire situation. He offers us hope that life doesn't have to stay the way that it is. Jesus gives us a detour from the road we are traveling and a better detination to pursue. The condemnation over our lives can be lifted.

How do we get this "condemnation" status lifted?

Jesus says, "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." - John 3:18 NIV

The condemnation can be lifted when we choose to believe in him. What does it really mean to believe?

I can believe that something exists but I don't entrust my life to it. I can say that I believe my purple hotrod that I drive will get me somewhere but until I actually get in the drivers seat, put the key in the egnition, I will not have acted on that belief. That is the struggle between passive belief and active belief.

When we believe in Jesus, and that belief is considered active, we are saying that we need him to get to heaven. We need him to get this condemnation lifted. We can't do it. We entrust our lives to him. That is what Jesus is meaning when he says we need to believe in him.

Have you fully surrendered your life to Jesus? Are you willing to follow him wherever he leads you? Are you entrusting your life to him as if your life depended on it?

This woman realized that there was no other way to be rescued. She needed Jesus. All she needed to do was to touch His garment. You and I can only have the "condemnation" status lifted when we fully surrender to Jesus, when we reach out to him. Have you fully surrendered to him?

If not, pray this simple prayer: Dear Jesus, I fully surrender to you today. I can't save myself from this condemnation. But you can save me from it. I believe in you as my savior and I fully surrender to you. I entrust my life into your hands. In Jesus name, Amen.

To be fully surrendered to Jesus is to know the Hope that God has for everyone of us. But what happens to us when we fully surrender? Is there a change in us? (Hint: John 3)

As you finish today: Pray for Pastor Rob and all his staff as they serve our youth and children. He is such a great pastor and his staff is truly outstanding. I believe God has great things in store for our youth and children's ministries.

Condemnation - Day 3

We've already established that we are declared guilty by God. The standard is perfection and we find that standard simply described in Exodus 20, the ten commandments. If we have committed even one crime against the law, we have failed and are therefore guilty. That guilt has consequences. What is the sentence? What is the punishment?

Paul says in Romans 1:32, "...they deserve death..." Paul is describing our culture and the condition of the human heart in chapter one of Romans. Because of our depravity, our desire to rebel against God, Paul says that we deserve death. God says to Adam, "...for when you eat of it, you shall surely die."

The punishment for our crime, our guilt before God, is death.

That death is describe through the Bible in three areas:
1. Death Physically. For Adam and Eve and the rest of humanity, are now subject to physical death. Everyone will die some day. Death is a stench in God's nostrils that He will end some day. But until then, everyone will experience a physical death.

2. Spiritual Death. God is spirit and in order for us to communicate with God we must have a spirit to have that connection. According to scripture our spirit is dead because of sin. Since our spirit is dead, we have no ability to have a personal relationship with God.

3. Eternal Death. The bible calls this place Hell. Because we are guilty, we will spend eternity in Hell.

What is Hell like? Lot's of people want to explain what Hell will be like. The best way to understand Hell is to look in scripture for God's perspective.

Sounds terrible doesn't it? We've been accused of crime. We've been told the evidence and declared guilty. Now to top that all off, our punishment is Hell. Sounds terrible.

Is there any good news? Yes, there is. His name is Jesus. Tomorrow we will talk about that hope we have in Him.

As you finish, take a moment and pray for our Teen Ministry. They need us to stand up for them and pray for them. When you see one of our teens from church, let them know that you are praying for God to do great things for His Kingdom in and through them.

Condemnation - Day 2

God instructs Moses to share these "Laws" with the people of Israel and God intends for them to obey them. These Laws will keep them in right relationship with God and with other people around them. Those laws are still with us today. We know them as the 10 Commandments. In the course of time, more and more laws were written, manmade additions, that the Israelites refer to as "The Law."

Paul writes in Romans 3:20, that obeying the Law will not make one righteous (right with God) but will actually expose their sinful tendencies (rebellion against God). When one tries to keep the Law they fail miserably. That is the purpose of the Law; to expose sinful rebellion against God. Those sinful tendencies are revealed in every culture at every level of society. It is revealed in those who are poor and in those who are wealthy. It is revealed in every man, woman and child. And it will continue to do so until God wipes out sin for good.

Paul writes 3 Specific ways those sinful tendencies are exposed in Romans 1:18-32:
1. Vs. 24 - sexual impurity (Prior to marriage, Adultery)
2. Vs. 26 - shameful lusts (homosexuality, lesbianism)
3. Vs. 28,29,30,31 - depraved minds, things that ought not to be done. (Read Verses)

Looking at that list, are we not all guilty of one or more of those sinful tendencies? As a result we are condemned, guilty as charged. It makes sense now. God is holding us accountable to a standard of righteousness and since we are unable to obey it, we are guilty, we are condemned. But that is not all.

What is the punishment for such a crime against God? (Hint: Romans 1:32)

Tomorrow we will look at what the punishment is and if there is any hope. Good news: Jesus is our hope!

As you finish: Pray for our children's ministry. Pray that many children surrender to Jesus and commit to living their lives for Him.

October 2010 Sermon Series Day 1 -

Romans 8:1, Paul writes, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus..."

What does condemnation mean? Condemnation is the act of pronouncing someone guilty after weighing the evidence. We've all dreaded the letter in the mail announcing that we have been selected for jury duty. A jury sits in the courtroom listening to lawyers either prove the innocence of the accused or present evidence proving the accused is guilty. After all the evidence is presented by both sides, a jury then deliberates and finds a verdict. Are they guilty or innocent? The evidence is key in the matter. After the jury discusses the case and the evidence presented, they present their verdict to the judge.  "In the case of the accused, we find the defendant, guilty as charged." That guilt is then followed up by a judgment, a sentence to be carried out.

Did you know that you have already been declared guilty? Did you know that you have already been condemned? - Wait a minute. What? When? How? Why? What did I do?

Paul tells us that there is a "Law" that we are under. What he means is that this Law judges us. That according to that Law we have been held accountable to it and we have all been found guilty of breaking it. The Law is a standard. A righteous meter. The top is perfection and anything below that is imperfection, and therefore, guilty of breaking the Law. As a result we are guilty.

What is the "Law" that Paul is talking about and where can we find it? (Hint: It is found in the book of Exodus)

Tomorrow we will be discovering what is in the Law and how the Law has proved our guilt.
